Is there any place (other than old brochures) to use as a quick reference to model year changes?? I'm looking to see differences in the 196 from about 1997-2002.
Thanks, in advance, for any insight.

Well, one insight is that the boat was not called a 196 until 2003.

Brochures are a good source. What are you looking for specifically? Hull changes? guage changes? graphics changes? What level of detail?

97' was the first year of the TSC hull which I believe continued through 2002. 2000 was the first year of the key-less ignition and some changes in the gauges, some of which proved to be problematic. Cosmetically 00' introduced graphic options, same as 99' or the new N logo. Motor options included the 310hp GT-40 throughout and was the most common, the GM Apex was available and had 10 add'l HP, BBC Python @ 430hp was also available from 99' thru 01' or 02'?, not as rare as the Apex but they are out there, you will find some 02's with the Excalibur, these will be late 02's when the Ford blocks began to dwindle. The Spyder tower was available some years but I have never seen one equipped with it. Cannot think of anything else however I am sure there is more.

Good luck in your search!

PS, BKH is correct, but I figured you meant the Ski Nautique, same boat different name.

Thanks, guys. I had been hoping to find a 99-01 Sport Nautique in my area...but haven't had any luck. Thus, considering the closed bow. There are both a 97 and 99 advertised locally w/ GT40. I didn't know if there were any significant changes (gauges, etc). Thanks for the heads- up on the 2000 gauge problems.
I'm also a little curious in the 2002 if I can find one at the right price. The convenience of the trunk is appealing. I'd be curious as to whether this redesign gives more interior space, and if hull performs much differently (more forgiving in chop, etc).
Thanks.

99 dash matches the main gel coat of the boat, 97 will be black. Motor box and back
seat redesigned in 98 and 99 for more room. Tach was changed in 98.

I'll leave to your opinion on the trunk. The 2002 was the first inboard I'd ever driven that backed up nearly straight. I don't feel it is any better or worse in the chop.

You believe wrong! TSC ran 97-01. 2002 = TSC2.

Some other changes in 2003.

The brand new 20'6" open bow walk through. They canned the 19'6" Ski Nautique Open Bow.

Spyder Tower was only for this year.

New platform shape, and offered in fiberglass.

Don't forget the 2002 SNOB. TSC 1, bro.

The 99 also got the re-tuned engine computer for the GT40 to fix startup-high idle and issues with leaning out the motor too much in some circumstances. Most importantly, the 99 got the tunable rudder, which I think is awesome.

True statement, but out of context.

You were debating Quinner's comment. If you consider Quinner's comment, it's 100% in context. In the poster's original post, he mentioned he was looking for evolution of the "196"- IMO the SNOB could technically fall into that category since it is the 19' 6" boat. I win.
