I just replaced the packing in the packing gland.  What are the high end temp limits of the gland?  Full throttle for 15 minutes it heats up to 120 ish.

Oliver,
That's high. How many drips are you getting through the gland and what type of packing did you use?

I'm getting the 10-15 drips per minute.  Using the waxed flax, initially I put 4 rings of packing.  water was running out, so I put in a fifth and tightened down pretty good with my hands.  Now the dripping is under control but I wander if it's too tight and running hot.

Run it some and see if the temp goes down. The 10 to 15 is good for the old flax and wax. Less than half of that if the Gotex is used.

Seems funny you would need rings of flax. What boat? Are you sure you got the right size? How much did you take out and what was it acting like prior to change???I did my 99 SN last year with 3 rings, 6 drips per minute and it doesn't even get warm in a 5 minute run at 35-40 MPH.

Martin,
There are times when some have used 3/16 on a gland designed for 1/4. Then, more rings are needed.

its a '88 2001.  I removed 4 3/16" rings because it was dripping too much.  I have a 1" drive shaft, the measurement difference between the ID of the packing nut and shaft is 3/16".

I ordered GFO and it just arrived, I try that out.
