The shaft box (is that what it's called?) on my Ski Nautique 2001 appears as though has been repaired or replaced. From the top, it looks fine but from the bottom, it looks a little haggard. I'm wondering what they're supposed to look like. Were they smooth and finished, with gelcoat on all surfaces? Also, should I be concerned about:
1. The space between the hull and the other piece shown on the bottom edge of the opening in picture 1? 2. The exposed fiberglass edge shown in pictures 1 and 2? 3. The thin translucent area shown in picture 2? (the boat doesn't stay in the water, if that makes a difference) Thanks for the input. |

Yea, that looks about right. My '93 is virtually the same. Fiberglass composite is translucent without the gelcoat layer (but the bilge paint should make it NOT translucent...so is there not bilge paint around the log. If no paint, then probably a repair of some sort). Thin is a relative term with fiberglass composite. 1/8" to 1/4" is probably what it is and that is plenty.
I think that CC probably installs the shaft logs after the hull is laid up and removed from the mold. They then cut out the opening and glass in the log. Just a hunce here, nothing to back it up...others may know for sure. |
