It is possible that a bad tachometer (internal short circuit) can short out the coil and cause the engine to misfire. Try disconnecting the tach completly and test driving the boat. If you problem goes away, I was right!

here's the problem. when pulling a rider on nice glassy h2o sometimes i can see the tach move about 2-3 hundred rpm. the boat dosen't sound any different and pulls just fine, but in choppy water the tach jumps around alot more and the engine sounds different looses power and misses. I just reset the timing befor this started happening so i think i might have messed up some wire. they all look ok though. i have an 88sn with a 351w
