OK CCF'ers, I'm trying to help a young kid named Ryan get his project straightened out over the air waves The link below is to his original post Turns out that there's a lot more than wiring for him to worry about. He had a PCM 351 Reverse Rotation engine in the boat and it died, so he got an Indmar 351 Normal Rotation engine from a Mastercraft and him and a mechanic installed. He verified the plug wires going around the cap Counter Clockwise was 1 3 7 2 6 5 4 8 He made a mistake or 2 or 3 though He took the starter off the MC engine and put his CC starter on the MC engine, so the engine's never gonna start till he puts a normal rotation starter on it. I gave him a part number for a normal rotation Ford PMGR starter kit......Arco 70200 They bolted the transmission from the CC to the MC engine without reindexing the pump so after the right starter is on it and the wiring is good, the engine should start but the transmission won't work because of the wrong indexing. He'll need a new LH rotation prop so that after the indexing is corrected, the boat will go forward when he shifts to Forward It seems that his mechanic doesn't want to believe any of this and is pushing back saying they can do it his way or he can find somebody else to work on it One thing he's telling him is that the distributor turns in opposite directions on a Normal and Reverse rotation engine and we know that ain't right ![]() So he's telling him a lot of things that somebody who's not familiar with 351's that turn in opposite directions would think I figure that if a few people chime in here, maybe the mechanic will do a little research and get things straightened out........maybe I figure most of the issues are lack of familiarity with CC's and their backwards engines, back in the 80's Here's a picture of his prop that he had with the CC engine just to show that he had a RH Reverse Rotation engine before the swap to the MC engine ![]() So again, don't be afraid to jump in here and help this kid out |

Feel bad for this kid, these are relatively easy to work on and i'm not an engine guy but it is very obvious that this model/year engine turns right hand rotation when viewed from the rear or flywheel like a marine mechanic does, which is as i understand not how an auto mechanic would view rotatiom from the front/pulley/fan.
Maybe the mechanic just doesn't know that the big three all produced reverse rotation engines and starters specifically for direct drive boats since cleopatras barge sailed the nile Too bad he didn't get the transmission and prop from the master craft. All the running hardware for that matter. He's in virginia, someome is close enough to help. |

The lad’s marine mechanic has lost credibility in my estimation. The lad needs to stop listening to his “marine mechanic” and listen to these experts that have “been there and done that” many times over.
The PCM engine is reverse rotation (RH). The new donor MasterCraft engine is standard rotation (LH).
The 1:1 velvet drive MUST be re-indexed the the standard rotation engine. Not difficult to do. The lad needs a new prop. Again, not difficult. The PCM starter will NOT work on the MasterCraft engine. The PCM distributor will NOT work on the MasterCraft engine. The rotors on BOTH the PCM and MasterCraft distributions turn in the exact same direction (counter-clockwise). The distributor gears that mesh with the camshaft are different. I hope the lad is listening… JQ |

Here's a link to a Borg Warner installation manual that has plenty of info on indexing the transmission pump for proper operation.
Here's a picture when set up for Normal Rotation Here's a picture when set up for Reverse Rotation Somebody should look at those too And here's a picture showing how rotation is talked about in the marine industry, it's different than the auto industry Right Hand is Reverse Rotation Left Hand is Normal Rotation And here are the firing orders for each, going CCW around the cap because the rotor rotates the same direction in both engines due to the cut of the teeth on the camshaft and the distributor gear being different between Normal and Reverse rotation,. |

And for your mechanic's wiring pleasure, here are 2 diagrams that he can mix and match to come up with the right wiring setup for your boat that now has an internally regulated voltage regulator and has an ammeter in the dash.
I'd show him but he doesn't seem to want any help

Well, rumor has it that the young lad AKA Ryan found himself a 13X12 LH Federal prop for the boat so that when everything else is good to go, he can have a boat that goes forward when he shifts into Forward
![]() Not a more modern CNC prop, but it'll move it along just fine, then he can decide if he'll spring for a new prop and keep this one as a spare

Here goes that rumor mill again......the kid got the engine running without his mechanic.
He got his new starter that turned the engine the right way and it fired right up. Learned a little about wiring the PMGR starter along the way. Funny things happen when it turns the way it's supposed to. ![]() So now he has an engine that runs and he's diving into the transmission pump reindexing next so the boat will move through the water with his new old prop |

Well done, Ken. Thanks for helping the lad through the wilderness of “marine mechanics”.

What a great story. Chalk this up to the proven expertise of CCFAN base. Maybe if this boat will accommodate a 4 blade prop, the owner can enjoy additional thrills. Afterall, the B.O.A.T. experience has a place in every ownership adventure.
