Hi all,
I could do with some help with the starter relay wiring on 2001 GT40
Can anyone tell me where the brown wire on this wiringing diagram goes to?
Previous boat owner has fitted a key start switch (keypad is faulty)
I have 12v at terminal (I) but without a ground wire, the relay doesn't operate.
The purple/red wire goes to the 12pin console connector, so I don't think I can just ground the brown without adding a resistor
I have checked all wiring diagrams that I can find, but I can't locate the other end of this wire

Cheers,
Ross

Your relay's ground path is the metal plate on the back that's bolted to the engine. It doesn't need a ground wire like some  do.

So.....i wouldn't go grounding that brown wire

When you turn the key to the Start position, do you get 12 ish volts to the "S" terminal on the relay? That's what energizes the relay to put power to the starter.

If you don't get 12 volts at the "S" terminal, I'd check your shifter in the Neutral position and check that you're getting 12 volts going into the Neutral Safety Switch on the transmission when you turn the key,

The flow path is from the key switch, thru the wiring harness and connector plugs back to the Neutral Safety Switch and on to the "S" terminal on the relay

If the switch is sensing that the transmission is in neutral, it's closed and power passes thru to the "S" terminal on the relay

If you do get 12 volts at the "S" terminal, and have no relay actuation, then you have a bad ground or the relay is bad

I'd worry about that stuff before wondering where the brown wire goes to and don't even think about grounding that brown wire .Wink

That's not the world's best diagram of the wires on a gt40 relay either even if someone at CC drew the diagram. There's one fairly important wire missing. That would be the big Red power wire to the starter

The Brown wire is called Purple in other diagrams for that solenoid. It's a bit of a funny shade of some color

Here are a couple of diagrams of the gt40 relay wiring, the first one out of a PCM manual and the second one is we'll call it my "non artists rendition"  Wink

The first one is the only piece of PCM published info that I've come across that shows all 8 wires. Anything else shows some but not all

And here's a link to the manual that the PCM drawing came from See page MT16

Thanks Keno
The relay I have is not original. It has been changed at some time to a generic universal one that requires a ground wire, so I will change it.
Thanks for your help
