Hello All,

This is another 'please help the oblivious EU-guys finish their project' post :)
As our build is nearing its final stages, it's about time to think about the first start of the boat engine. For those not up to date on the 1986 BFN rebuild thread, a quick overview:

- Boat bought disassembled, so no idea what works and what doesn't
- Long block (GENIV LH 454) completely rebuild with a new engine core, pistons, lifters (flat tappet), etc...
- Edelbrock marine 1409 carb, rebuilt with OEM kit
- Mallory points distributor

Now, for the first start of the engine, I'm reading that with new flat tappet lifters you should get the engine to 2000rpm instantly to make sure the lifters spin around freely. But i'm not exactly sure we'll get the engine started and immediately up to speed because of the rebuild carb and if the ignition is correctly set. (I'm guessing retarded or advanced ignition won't do any damages immediately while running without any load at 2000 rpm?)
Any thought on the oil to use for the break-in?
There is a good bit of information to be found for the break in of the engine on a different thread, but I'd like to do the first start-up on the driveway, as we don't have a slipway nearby.

TL,DR:
Asking for input on what to check and do for the first start up in the driveway. any input or tips are appreciated.

Thanks!

You can prime the oil system and get oil to all oil passageways and journals — before cranking the engine.  Do a search for “oil pump primer tool BBC”. Lots of options. The priming tool is driven by a power drill.  Pull the dizzy and insert the priming tool.  The drill / tool will engage the oil pump drive and will pump pressurized oil throughout the engine.  (Fill crankcase with oil first).

I like Lucas 20W-50 break-in oil.
