took the boat out and noticed the leak where the screw holes are for the intake strainer.  put boat on the lift and it appears that there are no screws in the intake strainer - see pic.  what size screw should i replace with? .

I guess that means that you already filled the transmission (your other thread) Wink

Is water leaking into the boat right there?

You don't need screws in those holes because the fitting in held in place by a big nut on the pipe at the top of the grate.

Here's a picture that will look familiar from one of your threads a couple years ago. Big nut under the 90 degree elbow holding the grate in place

Sealant in that space where the fitting comes through the hull keeps the water out. and the big nut keeps things tight.

I'd poke something in the holes and see if they actually go into the fiberglass  before getting too excited.

Her are a couple pictures of a "similar" one with no screw holes

It seems kinda unlikely that all 4 fell out of yours

Yes, thats where it was leaking, and the holes did go all the way through.  i put silicone in the holes and it appears to be holding.  Thanks Keno.  I tested the tranny again last night.

That grate is separate and absolutely needs screws… the through hull fitting is a separate piece.

How about a picture of this 2 part intake grate?

I've seen the generic type grates that can screw over a thru hull fitting but any grate I've taken out that serves as the cooling system inlet like this has been one piece, some with screw holes and some without whether it's been a CC or another brand They were one piece and the grate didn't come off when the screws were removed.

Last time I took something off the bottom of a CC from that time period like tracking fins, strut, rudder box etc. the piece was loose and falling off before the screws or bolts were all the way out.

Since I'd imagine the screws didn't all fall out at once, it must be some really good 39 year old sealant holding that grate on.Wink

And if it did fall off there should still be no path for water to get into the boat anyways except for the holes poked by the too long screws

If he's getting water in the boat because a screw or multiple screws poked thru the hull, I'd figure it's time for a machine screw, washer and locknut with a good sealing job to stop that leakage

Myself, I think this Keno guy is a little screwed up  Wink

Why's that you ask? Because I dug up my own picture of the same 2 piece grate and intake fitting from Ebay, complete with 4 little screws. It was from an 84 SN

But like above, if it fell completely off, there shouldn't be a path for water to get in unless the screw(s) poked all the way thru the hull and then fell out or somebody took them out.

I'd figure that me and TRB would probably both agree that a little more than a glob of silicone would be the best fix though

That last pic helped a bunch, thanks guys.  The boat is at the shop getting the tranny leak looked at. I will put some screws with silicone in in the holes when i get her back.

I would recommend that you use a below water-line sealant like 3M 5200 or LocTite PL marine sealant (rather than silicone).
