Morse MV-2 Control Shift Disengage Button

I recently purchased a new old stock Morse MV-2 control to put away in case the one on my 1990 SN ever needs to be replaced. It appears to be in new condition, but the Shift Disengage Button is spring loaded, very difficult to pull out, and doesn't stay pulled out when holding it. 

Is this normal - or did I receive a version of the control designed for another boat?
