Why does the Velvet Drive installation manual state on page 18 (21 of 29 on the PDF pages) that the cooler should preferably be mounted at or below the transmission centerline, yet the stock mounting location (and every picture I've seen of a transmission oil cooler installation) appears to be above the centerline?

I beleave that in the early days of the hydraulic marine reverse gears (transmisions) they were concerned with air entrapment in the oil circuit of the cooler. Then as the years went by, it was determined that there's enough velocity of the oil that air doesn't get traped evn if the cooler is above the centerline of the trans.

Here's a picture of somebody's Escort in a semi original 77 Tique.Wink

It's cooler is mounted at or near the transmission centerline at a bit of an angle.

Commander and Indmar 351's had their cooler down low and horizontal and at or near the centerline of the transmission and most every Mercruiser inboard engine over the years that used a Borg Warner has the cooler down low, horizontal and at or near the centerline of the transmission.

The manual you referenced gives a preferred location of horizontal and at or near the centerline which prevents drainback from the cooler.

The PCM location allows for drainback after shutdown which isn't a big deal, it just complicates reading your fluid level, but it cools just fine as long as it's plumbed according to the manual.

It's also pretty easy to access and it's easy to drain the water side for winterizing.
