1985 Ski nautique fuel issues

   Picked up a new to me 2001 Ski Nautique with Commander.Purchased it a few weeks ago. 
We initially could not get it start. 
we discovered a crack in the end of the fuel line between the fuel pump and the fuel filter. 
We bypassed the fuel filter all together and ran the fuel line directly from the tank to the fuel pump and voila the engine fired up.. yeah win.. bought boat!!!!

Took boat home and checked for flow on the fuel filter.. seems fine. 
-installed new fuel line between fuel filter and fuel pump. 

Went to lake to test boat out on trailer.. and engine cranks and revs up and immediately dies. 
If i increase throttle, engine revs higher and then immediately dies? 
it starts for a millisecond. then cuts out. 
I ran the main fuel line directly to the fuel pump and it did not work this time. 

i also lubricated my throttle cable and transmission cable which required me to remove cables from the Morse control. 
not sure if there is some Neutral Safety switch or ?

	This sounds like a fuel delivery problem. Things to check: - Fuel level in primary circuit fuel bowl is too low. If the needle / seat or float is stuck, little or no fuel may be getting into the carb. - Fuel pump may be bad. Pumps don’t run forever. - Slight vacuum in fuel tank not allowing fuel to flow to pump. Check anti-siphon fitting. See if opening fuel tank filler cap helps as this will remove vacuum. - Obstruction in fuel line or fuel filter assembly. Try this test to see if you have fuel at the carb: With the engine off, disconnect the throttle linkage from the helm at the carburetor. Then manipulate the throttle assembly of the carburetor and slowly open to full throttle position. While doing this, look down the bore of the carburetor. Do you see fuel squirting out of the nozzles in the accelerator circuit? That is a good indication of fuel in the primary fuel bowl. If no squirt, then there is no fuel in the fuel bowl or the accelerator pump is bad. JQ

	If you want to narrow things down, take a portable gas can and a short length of 3/8 hose (clear tubing is good so you can see if gas is being sucked up the hose), and run the hose from the gas can directly to the pump suction. You'll know if the pump is working if you do that. No gas getting sucked up, you have a pump issue. Gas getting sucked up, and it starts you don't have a pump issue and the problem is somewhere before the fuel pump in one of those places Jonny mentioned. If the carburetor is empty, you'll have to crank for a little bit to pump fuel to the bowls or give it a squirt of gas from a little squirt container to prime it. I'd say that you could use a shot of carburetor cleaner or starting fluid down the primary throats to prime it but some people tend to get all worked up about starting fluid

	Pour 1-2 tablespoons of gas down the carb throat and that should be enough to fire up the engine. I’ve used a pump squirt bottle to spray fuel down the carb to kinda, sorta keep it running waiting for the fuel pump to prime the carb bowls. Just don’t let a backfire ruin your day with the fuel bottle… JQ
