A Big Hello From Sunny South Africa!!

Greetings all, I just wanted to say thanks to Kieth for activating my account after all this time, think I somehow slipped through the admin cracks!

I am based in Pretoria, South Africa and purchased a SN 2001n (december 2019) from a friend of mine that has had the boat in a locker for the past 6 or so years and had finally given up on me pestering him to get the restoration/rebuild going on this beautiful boat.

So off I went on a 2 hour drive down to the river to see the machine after being left for 6 years and a bum attempt on a 3rd party stringer repair!! I opened the locker to find a very sad SN under a thick layer of dust and grime - but could see the potential of this machine once its finished. The boat company that previously worked in the boat removed the ski tower and the interior and ripped up the floors and just attempted to fibre glass over the rotten main stringers - This was not the request of the owner and wanted a full stringer replacement and new floors.

This is my first ever attempt on a boat rebuild and first time boat owner so i'm not sure if I have bitten off too much that I can chew. I just love the lines of this boat!!  I am by no means a professional in any of the required skills needed for this but am good with my hands and enjoy the technical aspects so wanting to learn as much as i can as I go along.

So far I have completely gutted the boat, worked on the engine and redid all the wiring and restoring the teak parts. Stringers have been replaced and new floor installed and is at the stage for a repaint and interior to be recovered.

Parts are a challenge in SA, but make do with what I can get my hands on and have some family living in the US that come over now and again and bring in a part or 2 for me.

I have enquired from the local dealer about parts but they are not interested in the older boats and hike the prices up and refuse to be ripped off. I rather just import directly from the US.

Would anyone be interested in my rebuild? I will post a few pics of the progress so far.

This site is amazing and learnt so much already, just wish we had the parts and services available in SA.

Hi Neal, welcome, from a fellow 2001 owning Saffer (in Cape Town though). Will definitely be interested in following your project - especially when it comes to sourcing parts etc. out here in deep dark Africa.

Had my boat's stringers replaced with composites by a boat builder in Somerset West, who did a good job with the stringers and fibreglass, but took a lot of shortcuts elsewhere, which I've slowly been fixing myself over the past year.

Hi Neal
My 1987 SN has rotten stringerCry. After only one year my dream ended and I won't be able to fulfill the exam of Swiss maritime authorities.
I wonder whether I should to the repair or just sell the boat for some dollars.
Do you have plans or diagrams of the wooden stringer? How have you done the restauration, all by yourselves or did you got some help of a boat specialist?
Thank you for any advise.

Sorry to hear about your stringers. You can replace but it will be some work. Do some searches via google for stringer threads. Include correctcraftfan in your search. Lots of info here. You can do yourself or hire it out. With research on this site you can do it yourself.

Your new stringers lasted 1 year?
