Neighbor blew his pontoon boat engine and it’s hard to find one in good shape. Something newer than 2010 and in good running shape (with compression would be good!). He’s in the Chicago area and faced with buying a new one and we know what those cost.
I’m just trying to help him salvage his season. PM me or here is fine too. |

I had that issue 2 years ago when my 50 hp Honda had issues. I bought a 115 ho Yamaha VMAX. It’s fuel injected and burns less gas than the 50 Honda did. Best $13,500 I spent all year. At 74 years old I’m sure it’s the last one I’ll be buying. Lots of power and quiet as a mouse.
It’s only money!

Wow 13,5? I’m pricing a 115 Honda and for giggles STandard 115 Yamie for supposedly 9k Mark without rigging. 9k sounds low to me but that’s what they’re saying.... Is the SHO that much more? Or is there hidden costs I’m missing? |

I’m pretty sure it was $11,500 for the 115 VMAX engine plus $2k for new gauges, rigging, installation and sales tax. I wanted to get the pain over with. Unbelievable difference in the 50 horse Honda to the Yamaha. I was expecting it to use a lot more fuel but it actually uses less. Gained 6 mph top end but it has tremendous hoke shot. Boat is a 1998 Harris Classic 24’ pontoon.

New Suzuki 50 for 8k all day long. Controls and install included. It’s what they are buying here in Florida. 6 yr warrantee top to bottom. Can’t beat it. I bought one.

Well yeah unbelievable difference, it’s more than double the horsepower!! Lol. I have an 06/07 Honda 50 on my Carolina Skiff which is its max rating. Super reliable, and I’m thrilled with its efficiency. Poor motor gets way too much of a workout. |

Yeah I bought the pontoon with thr 50 hp Honda from a guy who had 4 boats. He had a place on Lake Hartwell that only had 10 feet of water at the dock, when the drought hit in 2004 he was in the mud. I bought the boat for $9k August of 2004. Ran that motor with no problems until 2 years ago so I’m pretty sure I got my money’s worth out of it. Repowering wasn’t cheap but I like peace of mind when boating, BTW it was a 1998 Honda motor.
