Recently we were riding in 1978 correctcraft ski tique with a ford 302 commander engine. we noticed an electrical burning odor and the water temp gauge appeared pegged. we slowed down and there was a slight pop and the boat cut off. the electrical was completely dead.
(gauge and ignition did not function)

after being towed home and the boat sat over night, the ignition system did not work until i pushed the red button on the left back part of the engine.
the igniton and gauges began working.

A similar incident happened a week before this and we replaced the points and condenser.

Earlier this year we had an overheating problem and were advised to check head and head gaskets and we have done this... we also replaced the water pump, plugs and the coil...

question

1. what is the purpose of the red button?

2. can anyone offer help with the electrical problems?

thank you

1 The red button is a circuit breaker.2. Have you checked your Alternator? Also check that the solenoid is de energizing. Is the Starter staying engaged. Any of these would cause an overload that would trip the breaker. Also check the engine ground is it corroded badly if so clean it. Good luck
