Too bad the states don't open up some of the registration dB's to be searchable for some of that information, no personal information, but things like manufacturer, year of manufacture, engine type (Inboard, Outboard, I/O), Engine size, etc.. Of course that wouldn't help with all the un-registered boats laying around in people's yards...

or the unregistered boats on many of the private lakes. probably three that I know of on our little pond!
