They cost as much to build as the full size ones and like you say Bruce other consumers think alike. More profit in full size too. Matter of fact when our company bought they paid extra to delete standard equipment !

I had a 1990 toyota truck, 4x2, 4 cyl, 4 speed, carb, vinyl bench, rubber floors… towed 3500 lbs (after I bought a back bumper for it anyway), did a decent job of it. Averaged 22 around town, got 30mpg with a fresh tune up on the way back from florida one spring break. Had it one month before someone ran into us and totaled while my buddy was driving the last leg of that trip from florida. Sweet little rig, 23 years later if I could buy something with similar size and performance I would.

I always laughed that the Dakota was the largest(at least in my area the cheapest) and yet lowest selling pickup of the s10,ranger,Toyota, Dakota crowd and yet on their redesign the other three all decided they needed to go bigger.

I always liked those little Toyotas. At the time, they were the most dependable trucks made. First vehicle I ever heard of where the brakes lasted 80k miles.

I had an '81 Ford F100 with a 300 ci six and 4 speed overdrive tranny. It got 22 around town and 25 on the highway. Great truck, except for burning out clutches at the boat ramp.

I had a little black 4x4 95ish Toyota 5 speed I liked to bop around in. It had huge tires so it was a complete dog (B2300 engine I think). With stock tires it would have been a nice little truck.

I love 97-03 Dakotas. They just all rust to the ground :(. My R/T would smash a 3.9 V6 in highway fuel economy. They were so under powered they gear hunted under normal highway operation.

If it was extremely cost effective I would still be a small truck buyer (new for that matter) but there is no point with the new half tons doing what they do. Oh and Dodge made the 05- Dakota look like complete garbage.

this is cool thread. There are a lot of interesting tow vehicles. Here is mine. 2005 Suburban Z71 off road package. We purchased new and to date only has about 75K on the odometer. My wife uses this as her daily driver.

Lots of nice tow vehicles posted here. I feel compelled to add my 10 year old gray plastic 4-door sedan tow vehicle. 189,000 miles and less than $300 in repairs. 35mpg highway without a boat on the back, 18-20mpg towing a Mustang size boat. I couldn't find a photo of it towing either Mustang but here it is, the ultimate tow vehicle. Those of you who have settled for a new Explorer, ML, Cayenne, Yukon, Silverado, Suburban or the like, eat your heart out!
I couldn't avoid a couple of photos of it at work

Had to match, at least one color.

Doesn't look too bad with the old girl either.

Oddly, it seems the spam filters reject the words for the sport played on 18 holes and the vehicle in which one rides, so I will substitute the vehicle brand name Yamaha.

A previous boss thought the Dakota would work well for us Yamaha salesmen as it is the smallest truck in which one fits between the wheel wells. Circa 1985, with one Yamaha in the truck and another on the trailer, I threw a rod going up a long hill on 17 in the Catskill Mountains on a busy Holiday Friday afternoon, what a hassle and this was before cellphones. Shop guy brought me another truck on a flatbed and as we swapped it all out he asked if I'd checked the oil. I laughed and said...check it yourself, it's all over the ground.

They gave me another Dakota shortly thereafter. That one blew about a year later.

Just not up to the task in my mountain territory, but I actually liked them when empty, and the older squared look was good. the new Dakotas look like they fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down..

Yea, The carb 3.9 was pig city. We still have an 87 (the first year) 5 speed 4x4 that runs like a top (I rebuilt the carb a few years ago). It has had timing chain noise since it had about 20k miles on it when it came into our family. (140+/- now).

The harmonic vibration created by this engine is no doubt the culprit of its failures and short service life.

If anything I have always thought the earlier carbureted and TBI engines with lower power were smoother operating than the newer "Magnum" engines. Either way they are turds IMHO.

Dad had an 89 Shelby Dakota (Shelby swapped in a TBI 318). No issues there a fun little truck but curious why they didn't go for the 360 instead of the 318.

That 318 seems like such a sweet little engine in the CCs. I am surprised it is troublesome in the trucks.

Who said it was troublesome in trucks? The engine 74 blew up 2 of were the 3.9 v6. Chopped down 318 to 6 cylinders.

That Vette is HOT!

Many of you know I have used the Jeep for towing but it's cramped for long distances. It's now used for
local launching and boat retrieval

It tows Mustangs very well but on long trips the short wheelbase makes for a long ride too

I know every boat looks different in different lighting, but Gary, your boat looks downright yellow in the first pic...I don't care how hazy the lighting is, I wouldn't have thought it could wash the color out that much. Did you have the 70's weed haze filter on your camera?

Adam there have been a few boats thru here lately, that one is the one Tim found a couple of towns south of me. I got it and stored it until he could come and get it.

I wrecked my 95 Cherokee in the spring of 2000. Bought a beater s10 just to get me thru til the next year when I ordered this 01. Just got the order in on time since they were stopping production. Got everything I wanted but now kinda wish I'd got the limited.
