My father and I replaced the damper plate on his '88 2001 a couple years ago. You could hear a busted spring or some other part with the plate off the flywheel. After 15 hours of use, the boat had the same symptoms as when the first plate went. We thought the plate may have not been perfectly aligned or bent during the first install. After pulling the second plate, it showed no apparent signs of abuse. I cut all six springs out and they were fine.

Has anyone pulled a damaged plate that showed little signs of wear, or could this be another issue? The prop shaft is aligned and solid, and the noise and roughness of the motor was only at 500-1000 rpm. The boat ran perfrctly otherwise.

It started making noise and killing the motor at lower rpms. Anything above 1,000 and it was fine. A bolt to the plate broke during the removal of the first dampener and we unknowingly replaced with nonshouldered bolts.

I should also mention that the second plate didn't appear to be bent after removal, but the alignment of the plate could have side loaded it due to the use of non-shouldered bolts, which we found out were necessary after the install.

We DID physically realign the prop shaft after the first install. Is there any way of distinguishing this could be a tranny problem or just the plate?

never had one fail that quick, its a part thats hard to diaganose a failure on, leave the next one loose and sneek thru the starter hole to tighten it up once the transmission is piloted

It could depend on how you're driving the boat. If you slam the throttle from neutral to wide open. I always put my boats it gear at idle before any full throttle.
