When recently replacing my throttle cable because it broke, I noticed that the carb linkage hits it's travel stop before the hand lever hits it's stop. So my cable gets pulled on every time I go to WOT for a start.

Is this how other boats are set up? It seems to me I'd be better off hitting the stop at the hand lever a fraction of an inch before hitting the carb stop to ensure the max cable tension was never very high.

FWIW, I have a 1984 2001 with the original carbed 351.

Uhm, don't push so hard, it won't go any faster...
If it was original, you were overdue for a cable failure.

Change the shift cable too before the boat runs somebody over.

Are you implying you need WOT most every start? what are you pulling?

There are adjustments on both ends of the cable. When i replaced mine i had to fiddle with it a little to get it right.
