Just wondering if anyone has any tips for removing a prop without a puller. Or if i should attempt to. I need to have it reshaped and don't have a puller. (yet) 1993 Ski Nautique cb..Thanks.

Dave,
I highly recommend you use a puller. I've seen too much damage to prop hubs done by "shade tree mechanics". If the prop is properly seated on it's taper it really on there and you can damage the hub to the point where the taper needs to be reamed. |

I agree with Pete, but, I have had success pouring boiling water directly on the prop and it popped right off. It might be worth a try but don't beat on it.

Robbie,
If a prop comes off with heat (especially hot water) then I can safely say the prop wasn't properly installed and seated on the taper. Proper prop installation includes lapping the prop on. Have you see the pictorial tread "proper prop installation"? |

Pete,
Yes I have seen the thread and I have done the lapping. But, isn't the hot water worth a try in a pinch, as long as you don't beat on anything? All I am saying is it worked for me one time in a pinch. |

Yes it's worth a try and I'm sorry I didn't mention that. I got side tracked on not wanting him to go after the prop with a big hammer!!

Thanks for the info. I am going for the prop removal tool...Just makes more sense.. I might pour some boiling water on it first just to see...And Pete I won't be beating it with a hammer...lol

You can make a 3 jaw puller work, I have done it in a pinch.. If you do a lot of your own work chances are you have one of these around, but considering a prop puller really isn't that expensive its a worthwhile investment.

Put your feet up against the prop guard, get your forearms behind the prop blade evenly (this will take a small 2x4 if it is a 3 blade prop). Apply very firm and even pressure (lifting with the legs mind you, safety first!) and have someone give the back of the prop or the tip of the shaft a rap with a hammer. Don't forget to leave the nut loosened but on the shaft or you will roll backwards across the driveway when she lets go..
Mind you I am mostly kidding and one should never do this... except that I have never had it not work when I was stupid/desperate enough to try it. |

Lakeside..did you get my PM on the prop?
are you getting a new one or you will work the one you have? I used a 3 leg bearing or pulley puler last week to remove my prop...I turned to a point I thought it would break..then the prop popped off... |
