I was adjusting the prop shaft and rudder packings on my '79SN over the weekend and noticed that neither of them have safety wire to lock the packing nuts in place. Nor did I see anyplace to fasten or anchor safety wire.

I know my '02SN and my friends '82 SN have safety wire in both locations.

Was this not added until later years? Just wanted to see what everyone else's experience was.

I find safety wiring to be inconsistent. My '77 has "safety" wiring only at the coupler set screws. Neither the shaft packing or rudder packing has safety wiring. Same goes for the rudder of my '93, but the shaft packing has the wire. Not sure about the coupler as I never saw the original as I am changing to tapered shaft/coupling that will not require safety wiring.

IMHO: Shaft log and rudder do not need safety wiring as both have a jamb nut. Straight shaft couplings with set screws definately should be safety wired or at least thread locker used.

I think the only reason they drilled the safety wire holes into the jam nuts is so that you don't have to smoke down the jam nuts to keep them secure. I tightened mine just a smidge beyond snug, and then safetied with .042 safety wire.
