I'm trying to figure out the best way to remove the vinyl(?) pin stripes from my '82. Should I use a heat gun? Are there any cool chemicals that I can use?

Any advice is appreciated.

I just remove some of mine night before last. I simply used a razor blade followed by Acetone to remove the adhesive residue. I do NOT recommend this practice if your boat is painted. Just be carefull with the blade so you do not gouge the gelcoat.

BTW, I had to remove all the stripes with the blade because I am repairing stress cracked gelcoat...so the tape was broken often at the cracks. You might find that once you lift enough of the tape with the blade, you can just carefully and slowly pull it off.

nope, although worth a try. With a razor blade, I had about 5 feet off in under 90 sec.

The heat gun does help incredibly along with the blade David mentioned and you won't need a super sharp one either. My gun has the scraper type attachment to use also. It's a sinch(sp).

You can go to NAPA or an automotive paint supply store and get a special rubber disk that attaches to a drill that is made to remove pin striping and have the whole job done in 15 mininutes with out scratching or digging into the gel coat or going back to remove the adhesive.
