Living up to my screen name again. I am trying to fix a no charging situation on my 2000 dodge dakota 3.9 v-6, 180,000 miles. I started with the negative cables that I had replace the post connection on previously. New cables from negative to the engine ground, to the chassie ground and positive feed from the engine compartment electrical box to the alternator, and all connections cleaned. Charged the battery. No improvment but money well spent anyway they were due. Cleaned positive cable ends to starter and electrical box and both battery posts at the same time. Pulled the alternator and had bench tested 11.1 volts going out. yea problem solved... or so I thought. New alternator installed votage at battery 12. voltage from neg battery to Positive out on alternator 32 volts Checked three times, I was expecting 14 ish. First question is this right or did I get a bad unit. I do not know where the voltage should be regulated. Checked voltage while running at the underhood electrical box, 12 volts on the battery in side and 32 on the alternator in side. Proud of what I have done but clueless were to go next.

I'm no expert either but I believe Chrysler products are regulated in the ECM.If you take your battery out you will even see a temp sensor in the battery tray,I believe it senses battery temp. You may be doing alot of parts changing before you fix this one, might be better to google a Dodge forum and ask there. Good luck I hope it works out for you.

Turns out it was not that difficult, Found the main 140 amp fuse was blown, Had looked at it earlier when diagnosing but did not re-check after we had a brief short during the re-wiring. As soon as there was load on the alternator voltage dropped to 15. Most important I did it myself.
