Well, maybe that will light a fire for JJ to get moving on the boat rather than throwing out excuses. I didn't have any money when I got my first boat, and, last time I checked I still don't have any

That looks interesting...

Hollywood, is that really the one johnny is looking at. has anyone seen the boat inperson and looked it over. If it's as nice as they say it tells johnny to go pick it up and I trade him mine and some money. Minus the hi-teks of course.

Yes. I was going to look at it for him, but the guy wouldnt unwinterize. Can't do much til spring without a test drive.

Yep, winterized & no water in his pond.
Not many test-drives going on in N.E. this time of year.

Although I bought my 84 - Feburary in Ohio.
Drove out, looked it over, pulled it home.
A week later it had a foot of snow on it.
I mustuv been young & crazy !
(But I just did the same with a Motorhome - Flew out to Tenn., bought it and drove it home.)

I drove our 00 home on 2/4/06 in a snowstorm, 220 miles. The entire time I was envisioning what seemed like an inevitable horrific accident with the boat and trailer, but it never happened. At the end of the ride the guide poles on the trailer had a wedge of ice on them facing forward- aerodynamic!

It confuses me why people even bother listing boats for sale if theyre not willing to let a potential buyer test drive them. This is not the only instance Ive run into lately and it baffles me!

I test drove my '90 with Joel in Nov '05. You test drove your '00 when you bought in Feb, right Joel? Unless a boat is severely underpriced and is worth taking a chance on, I cant imagine buying a boat without driving it first.

Yep, test drove a 95 siggie in October of 05,98 in November 05, and then the 00 in late January of 06 in Indy. The 00 dealer didn't hesitate to dewinterize it for one second, one of the several reasons they got my business.

Tim,
I guess it comes down to the feeling you get about the sale.
With my 84, I had talked with the guy, he was a fanatic, beautiful boat, great condition, already winterized (no water in his lake either) I jumped on it! No regrets.
With my MH, they had a nicer rig than they knew they had, hard-luck story and had to sell. Paid the low asking price on EBAY, took a 1000 mile test drive driving it home. No regrets.
You can get a pretty good gauge by talking with people.
And by taking a good look, you can usually tell how things were cared for.
A little risky - yea. But, if it's really what you want, it's also risky that a guy like me would come along & it won't be there in the spring.

Maybe the buyer should pay for the re winterizing if he doesn't buy the boat. That would eliminate the tire kickers.

there using it in 3500 series trucks and you do see them alot in the marine world, the king builds it, Chevrolet
i believe it is a stroked 454 and possibly a different bore, some of the race guy's get 572 cubes out of this engine. it is a torque monster. i was kidding about the king thing im a chevy guy, and we always need controversy on the site

Holy Sh*t!
I thought my computer jumped over to Planetnautique after checking back in on this thread!
I posted the link because I thought some of you motor-heads on here would drool over this boat.
But, it's turned into a bullsh*t thread over winterizing???
If your interested, make a call. I'm sure you'll be able to find out anything you want to know about the boat.
This guy knows ski boats up/down/inside-out! His family has had ski boats since they started to walk.
(4) brothers (all excellent barefooters/skiers) w/ (4) ski boats.
(Seeing their boats over the years is how I caught the Ski-boat fever.)
If ya want to be clowns head over to the Planet. If you want straight Nautique talk stick around here.
As I said before- My understanding is that it was already winterized & No water in the pond!
Enough bull-sh*t!

Easy, just a few jabs. Wouldn't necessarily throw it under the BS bus quite yet although you are helping.

Now I'm a bit more surprised that winterizing would be of absolutely any concern.

the point is it's not a factory motor, so everyone is asking questions because of that, and if someone is really interested in the boat then re-winterizing isn't a big deal as the boat would most likely sell and the owner would be re-winterizing it anyway.

And then let's not forget about the slow responce by you, we here have been here and will be here and sorry about ya feelings on the sleeve oh thin skinned one.

The 496 and 502 dont share the same block, do they?

Scott, Im not sure what BS youre referring to. The lakes here arent frozen yet and winterizing a boat is no big deal. Plenty of us have test driven boats in the cold.

Spending $12k on a 20 yr old boat without a test drive would be a serious leap of faith. I can see how a serious potential buyer would be frustrated by the situation- even more so now that the boat has been flashed in front of all us drooling CCFans. I understand that youre coming from the other side of things by knowing the seller.

I probably wouldnt have dropped a Mercruiser into a BFN, but any Nautique that runs in the 50's is OK by me.

This whole thing is really a shame as I mentioned to JJ that I was going back east over the holiday if he wanted me to tow it home I would.   We we're sort of jokin about it but if I had known I was going to be that close to it it could have worked out for both parties. I just spent 3 days at the Ramada in in Seekonk, Ma. Coulda cranked that baby up, taken it for a spin and towed it home. I guess I missed where the boat was located until today.

Flip side to that is I'll be going back in May and I will drive if I have something to pull home.

to close of cubes to share the same block, i dont know, all these new engines they are coming up with at Chevy is puzzling, One thing about Merc is thier R and D is next to none, I imagine sometime in the not so distant future one of the big three will offer a limited edition hp600SCi, its factory charged with warranty, i bet though it will be a 15k option. the only 502 available from merc now is the 525 hp and up models the rest of the line-up are at 496 cubes and under in which these are all naturals

I am with 79 and TRBenj, I am not buying a twenty year old boat with out driving it. I don't care if I know the owner or not. The fact that the enginie is not the stock set up also is a cause for concern. I would to take it for a spin an see how it shakes out. Alot to be said for a test drive and a pull behind a potential purchase. Don't get me wrong, seems how the owner refuses to dewinterize and let it go for a test drive I will be looking come spring for it. That is if Johhny passes on it. After that it's every man for him self.

Believe me guys, I'm not trying to sell the boat to anyone.
(and in my short talk with it's owner, I don't think he was trying real hard to sell it immediately either. He bought another Hot boat at end of season and had put this one away for winter)
I just knew it was a pretty cool boat that would be of interest on this site.
But, sorry to interupt, by all means - continue the winterazation bannter

Chris - No thin skin here. Was just surprised that the thread went in a funky direction?

Alan - If I knew you were back East, I would've bought you a few beers! The Ramada is about 10 mins from my house. If your back in May, drop a note.

i change the motor with a 502 merc it fit right in with no real mods that had to be done. just had to change the prop rotation . because 502's rotate the same as a truck. it took about 16 20 20 hrs with my self and nephew it went realy smooth.put it in the water and let me tell you that bfn went like a b---ard!!! 54 with with 2 people in the boat or 51.5 with 4 200 # guys and a 200# guy one foot long line it is a turn key operation, like scott said i bought another hot boat. so i really wasnot pushing to sell it because of the time of the season. so if you have any ?? feel free to ask

Posted By: 79nautique
Date Posted: November-27-2007 at 11:18pm
would have thought it would run out better than 54. But with the rotation change how did it effect the ride and handling of the boat. With the deep-V hull design maybe it doesn't effect it has much as it does a SN.

NEDLUTZ,
I didn't relize that was you, welcome to the site.
Didn't mean to put your boat in the middle of a bitchin/whining session like this thread seems. Just knew that many on here would love to here about that boat.
Most guys here are very knowledgeable and I've learned tons from them (as I have from your family).
This is a great boat site - Welcome aboard!
(Don't worry, with that new toy, you'll be welcome even though it's from another camp! )

Wow, 502 in the BFN! That thing must be able to tow a battleship. I know James' BFN with the 454 with seven people in it pulled very strong. Not to mention the gallons of water coming over the side when that boom was low. James, we couldn't slow you boat down if we tried. That left a long lasting impression on me.

The million dollar question, could this boat pull 4, 5, or maybe 6 guys out, deep water start? I would guess that it have more than enough balls to yank many footers right out of the whole. Very cool boat, love the colors too.

I like the colors on the boat, what prop are you currently running on it? Why such a loss in speed with the addition of weight? Are the speeds you posted GPS or speedo?

Thanks for the posting the pic, it's always a proud day for a boat owner when you put your ride through a serious work out and it preforms well.

I asked our head of maintenance at the plant who races a 496. He said yes, it was the first stroking/boring of the 454. The 502 was the next step with some minor bore changes.

The 496 and 502 dont share the same block, do they?

I asked our head of maintenance at the plant who races a 496. He said yes, it was the first stroking/boring of the 454. The 502 was the next step with some minor bore changes.

Thats what I always assumed. I was told not too long ago by someone that seemed to know a BBC's pretty well that they were different. It seems I got bad info.

I didnt really know, with numbers that close to each other it would be kinda stupid to design a new block and cast it and re-fit everything else

Are you still visiting us. I hope you didn't think that my questions were a joke. I was hoping for some more info about the prop, I forgot to ask three blade or four blade? Who makes the prop?

So how many RMPS is the 14x14 turning at WOT? I can see where a 13x13 would bring the RPMS up quick. Here some tips on posting pics.

Brian, The photobucket opens to a "page not found". You have said that you installed the 502. If you did it yourself, I sure hope your mechanical skills aren't anything like your grammar or computer skills!!
