Pulling a load of skiers last night at practice and I heard an awful howl...I figured it was cutlass bearing related but didn't expect to see the whole thing loose on the shaft

Guess the set screws have a job after all.

Tap that thing back in and tighten the set screws...

Which bearing is that?   I have been leaning on the side of not too much set screw torque on those lately,   I should maybe spend a bit more time on putting drill points in the bearing.

WELL....we had the cutlass bearing replaced I think in the spring of 2017 by a local Nautique dealer....Looks like they may have forgotten the set screw detail?

I've never touched drive shaft/struts/rudder stuff. A bit beyond my skill and knowledge so whatever you guys say. It's a club boat. We use the heck out of it.

Mike,
I wonder if the dealer checked the alignment? With proper alignment, there should be very little drag from the shaft to the cutlass.

I can't tell from the video. Did they install a traditional brass/rubber or a plastic?

Hey Pete, I'm not positive on alignment. I have watched the shaft spin through the access hatch and it seems to be solid as a rock though I'm sure it could be off and not see it with the naked eye.

They installed a brass one. I called them and they said to bring it in so they could look it over again. The rudder is also loose/feels like there's a lot of play in it so they will check that too. I sort of know the guy, he used to ski on a show team near by and he grew up on Lake Delhi here in Iowa....Their Nautique to other boat ratio was about 9:1 in the 90's and early 2000's so he DOES know his Nautiques...though not quite like some of you I bet!

Anyways...I'll update you after they check it out. He asked if I felt any vibration before it let loose. It was always pretty smooth however it would rumble when pulling a really heavy load off the dock or out of deep water but every other inboard I've driven has done that. (I think that's related to prop/RPM etc. Like the prop is gripping and not spinning, I dunno I'm an IT guy

Before the dam broke (2008?) I counted over 100 Correct Crafts in the 8 mile stretch of Lake Delhi!

We visited a few weeks back and that number is significantly less than before the dam broke. Dealer confirmed their market turned to pontoons.
