All,
I have received a couple of "off the record" questions if there will be a fall event at Badin Lake and the answer is yes.

The dates for the 4th annual Badin Mini are: Friday 10/5, Saturday 10/6 & Sunday 10/7. For those looking to arrive early or stay later there is no issue but please let me know in advance.

In preparation for the event I have finally cleaned up the neighbors downed tree and we should be good with wood to keep the fire going for the weekend.

Bring her along. If you can get her up there on January 1 when you are going skiing when it's 28*, you can certainly get her up there in early October when it is actually still quite pleasant.

Since I'm coming from farther away this year I'm going to shoot for arriving Tuesday. That should put my actual arrival somewhere around Friday afternoon. Vandygayle is TBD, that's a super busy weekend for weddings, I'm sure Greg can agree.

I think I may leave my 79 home. It is quickly fading, floor and interior are falling apart so I think its time to park it and get ready to tear the floor out and get the interior redone so that it will be ready for next spring.

Glad to hear a voice from the northeast. Hopefully a good turnout from NY and New England. Now waiting to hear from the midwest/Chicagoland folks. Hoping on a good turnout. Always fun when that happens. And I have it on good authority, no hurricanes this year. Well not the windy kind, hopefully the woody kind.

Whoa! A Barracuda sighting. Brad, you coming?

How about the Harts?

I suspect many northerners are still trying to make it through the summer and see what vacation days will be left in the tank. I had an overseas work trip looming that had a chance of conflicting but those dates are now set for Oct 15 so I am likely in the clear.

If only they didn’t live 5+ hrs apart... don’t think their paths cross until VA.

Harts are likely snowed in by Oct, not sure Canada would stamp their passports anyways.

We are a definite maybe, always an awesome trip- gotta see how our fall schedule shapes up in the next month or so.

I mean I will go out of my way a reasonable amount for a Caravan - but the most direct routes for either of us wouldn't cross until a couple miles from Badin.   Its a bit of a drive for sure but has been a pretty drive the past few years.

Like driving 5 hours (or flying) to Mooresville then jumping in a RV to drive 14 hours to a gathering of skibuds on a small lake in Goshen?

And your point is?????

What is the water status of Badin? High, low, full? Are they doing anything like letting water out in anticipation of all the rain that's being predicted? If so, I'm sure it's a very delicate balance so too much isn't sent down to lower spots where there's lots of rain predicted as well.

I'm sure the power company has been down that road before. Hurricanes are not a rare occurrence in NC. I grew up outside Raleigh and we felt the effects of hurricanes pretty regularly. Basin Lake is about a hundred miles west of Raleigh so it shouldn't be tremendous impact. I'm on Lake Keowee now, controlled by Duke Power and they do not hesitate to release water when conditions warrant. They monitor the water flows 24 7 so flooding should be minimal. Trees will go down and we may lose power briefly. On the coast and midlands it is going to be terrible.

Pete
The lake is currently 1.04' below full pond elevation. Cube Hydro who manages the intake/release of water to feed their hydro plant has put the disclaimer up that homeowners should expect extreme fluctuations and lake levels with the expectation of up to 15" of rain. As was said in the previous post this is not the first time they have been through this type of event. Two years ago following a Hurricane I saw the lake level come up over 24" in 36 hours.

I would hope that with all the rain that we had this summer most of the shoreline debris has already washed down the river and we will not see large amounts of debris.

The next few days are going to be interesting

Seeing as how we've ridden out remnants of Hurricanes at just about every Badin Mini; I vote we just call it a Hurricane Party. Bring your boat and ride out the storm. If we did that then we'd surely have a sunny rainless event for the entire weekend.

This hydrograph tells a pretty good story.

Look how low and dry last years event was. Almost impacted Badin Fest. Last summer was crazy dry and water levels were down. We'll see what this storm does, but either way, probalby settled down in 3-4 weeks.

There are a ton of reservoir and power dams in the region and like Pete suggested, its a balancing act. You want to let out enough water to protect property in the vicinity of the reservoirs and not stress the dams, but no so much that downstream lowlands, also getting plenty of their own rain are not flooded.

The roads are fine - and debris has exited the the lake
The lake level is showing 2.5" below full and forecasted to remain at that level

Here are the details Kevin
extends from sometime friday to sometime sunday
people will start dribbling in mid friday. I know some out of towners will be rolling in mid day. A friend and I maybe a little earlier friday, maybe setting up Gary's slalom course, too. Boats gather at Gregs dock. Boat parking for a few around the dock, mooring is an option. Boat ramp is within a 1/4 mile of house, Boats will then likely head to one of the multiple "ski coves" down along the eastern shore. Rafting and/or skiing through the day. Sounds like pizza friday night. If any light, maybe back out after dinner, if not, hanging around the fire pit. BYOB or cans. If you spend the night , there might be a place to crash on a floor, or your tent or whatever. Saturday. Hopefully some folks will sign up to provide breakfast. Real early birds might head our for some flat water skiing. After breakfast, a caravan or scattered departure to a cove. Back to dock mid day for donalds cookout. After that, pretty much a repeat of Friday, Pretty easy, lots of fun, good company. Bring some drinks, sign up for a meal or part of.

The cove rafting time will vary widely depending on how the night before's activities went and how hard the mornings skiing went-

I hope that you take the time to stop by the house as well as the rafting which I would suspect would be around 3 pm. My cell is 704.506.5905 if you have any questions

Ugg!
i have just been pulled in to work all day Saturday. I am on the board for an animal rescue and they are in desperate need for help for our annual fundraising event...which I only just realized was the same day, 10/6. We unfortunately will be unable to attend!

I was truly looking forward to meeting everyone after all the help i have received from this crew! I'm sorry we can't join in the fun and hope there is another opportunity in the near future. Be sure to post pictures/videos!!

I will not be able to attend as originally planned, I have to head to Savannah and possibly Orlando this upcoming weekend. Maybe at Whitelake in the spring The 79 will have a new floor, stringers, and foam. Then we will really get to see what the EX330 will do without waterlogged foam.

Susan -
You get a "pass" for not attending given your conflict. I am sure with the recent hurricane that the needs are at a all time high. Hope that you reach out if your down this way in the future and stop to say hello. For what it is worth my wife (also a Susan) also volunteers with a local rescue - truly a noble cause.

I launched the 206 yesterday and checked the water temps on the way to the dock. The water is a mild 77.2. Given the temperatures called for this week (mid to high 80's) the temp should increase to the 80's. I am just going to leave the weather predictions there

There is a very good launch that is less than 1/4 mile from my house off Shoreline Drive (used to be the old circle drive access).

wow...where to begin.....

just returned from driving 1240 miles this weekend and it was worth every turn of the wheel. Greg and Sue are just awesome hosts. Greg even ordered up some fantastic weather. We stayed out saturday till the sun went down. I took some pictures and posted them on FB but have no idea how to move them here. Larry..a little help? Tim should have some pictures also.

Thanks to all who turned out...brought food....brought boats...

Thanks to all who humored me by skiing with me. Thanks for all who let me drive their boats or let me pull them.

Thanks to the Monahans for bringing my brother along so I could enjoy the weekend with him.

Thanks mainly to Greg and Sue. What awesome hosts.

If you are on the fence about attending this event...jump off and get yourself to Badin....you won't be sorry.

Greg and Sue,

Thanks for hosting another great event. I had a blast. Friday was 92 (F) and Sunny and Saturday and Sunday were both 87 (F) and Sunny. I do believe this was the best weather we have had yet for this event. It was great to see old friends and the chance to meet some new friends. .

Can't wait for next year.
