I have a 1991 dash panel I have been fixing up. Most of the breakers seemed to not work the intended features like the :bilge pump, blower, lights and more. The ignition worked and that was about it. I have replaced the right side with the correct original amperage breakers. The left side has 3 10Amp breakers- which I am now out of. I do have 3 NOS 15 amp breakers, I was wondering if I could use those instead. It is for the Navigation lights and the two accessories breakers. Just don't want to spend $100 if I don't need to. Any one have any input on this?

Mmmmm, 15 is close enough to 10.

Will it switch on/off -> Yes

Could it cook your wiring in the event of a short before tripping the breaker potentially starting a fire -> Yes

Todd- so the Mmmmmmm. part of your comment. You think 15 would be ok? Someone told me can always go up- not down. I actually don't have anything running off accessory breakers other than original stereo.

They used to put copper pennies in the old Edison base fuse holders too!!

Pete- would love your thoughts. Was gonna say "2 cents" with your penny comment😀

Ultimately what dictates breaker size is wire size. Seems to me IIRC my entire 93 is wired in the same 16ga wire except the teeny 10ga feeding the dash, despite the breaker size. So if it were 16ga wire, I wouldn't think twice about using a 15 amp breaker. It's not correct. Like you said, accessory switches aren't used, how often do you use the bow light? put the 15's in and as often as you're parting out boats next week you'll have new tens and then I'd correct it.

Rod,
As Todd mentioned, it does come down to wire size. It's like putting a 20 amp breaker in place of a 15 in your house but the circuit is only wired with 14 ga. I don't want to recommend going to the 15 when the originals were 10. I'm not a big fan of those breakers anyway. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't!!

I'll answer for Pete - since Pete let me down...............

Get out the VOM!

If you could jump the breakers and have it all work, replacing the breakers should fix you up. If they don't work jumped....Trace the hot from the ignition breaker or the ground at the dash (a common issue).

Last time I looked the manufacturer still makes them. Make sure you get both a switch and breaker combination. It was worth the extra $7 each for me to just by them from skdim.com
