First time poster. Looking for a Nautique for the family primarily for skiing but also tubing and some footing. Weighing in at 6 ft 210lbs I like it between 39-42 mph on the water.

I have a line on a 1993 open bow Nautique with a tower. http://stlouis.craigslist.org/boa/4888439448.html

It has a 351 PCM with 757 original hours on it. Looks clean and well cared for from what I can tell thus far. However what I don't know and what I call upon the experts here is the following:

- Whats the top speed of this boat? Can I get 40-45mph comfortably out of this with a couple kids and maybe an adult in the boat?
- Can I attach a barefoot boom to this boat? The current owner is not a footer and never attached a boom. I see that the tower mount looks to be directly behind the driver seat which makes me wonder if that would be in the line of the boom out the side.
- Hows the ski wake behind this open bow boat? Is it better suited to boarding or is it good for slalom as well?

Thanks for any info you can provide.
Tom

That appear to only the 240hp engine. I don't think it will pull you barefoot with an average load to 39mph. Acme prop, that'll help. Hopefully it is the correct size for the application.

The open bow configuration cramps the cockpit, a boom out the driver side, in an optimized position, will be tough but still doable. A straight boom out the passenger side is much simpler.

It is a Ski Nautique, slalom wake is excellent, and time to throw away the tubes.

Oh man, no tubes!

That's a ski nautique open bow. It will have a great ski wake and with enough weight, a decent wakeboarding wake. Plenty of power for barefooting- though the exact speed it will hold depends on whether it has the proboss (ho 351) at 285hp vs the standard 240hp 351w. The latter will still hold a guy your size at 40 and is only a head upgrade away from holding 43-44. Unloaded, expect 41-43 (240hp) or 45-47 (285hp).

A boom will fit, though it will likely be tight on the stbd side on a snob. Side spray is not bad on this hull.

It's worth noting that the SNOB had the same hull as the closed bow Ski Nautique, but a different deck with the dash moved back a bit to accommodate the open bow. This makes the cockpit a bit more cramped, and you lose the under bow storage. The open bow is a shallow playpen and has a walk over (not walk through). They didn't sell in great numbers and usually command a premium price- and this one is priced very high considering it's not in mint shape. Personally, I think a closed bow of the same vintage offers more useable space and storage, and would save you a bit of money (and would be easier to find a nice one). To really gain significant space, it might be worth considering a Sport Nautique, the 93-01 years were based on a lengthened version of this same hull and are very versatile boats- only forgoing a small concession in skiing and performance compares to the smaller Ski Nautique.

Welcome (and ditch the tubes).

HW is wrong on the speed, btw... My 90 SN (same hull) would pull my 195lbs 41mph when it had 240hp and an upgraded Acme prop like the one this '93 has. I don't see proboss decals on the shroud, but it may very well be so equipped... A closer inspection of the heads or engine model number (listed on the tag on the intake) would provide the necessary clues to be sure.

Thanks for the responses.

I will refrain from sharing the "ditch the tubes" comments with my 5 year old daughter. Although I think she'll be ready to hit the skis this year. My 8 year old son however is ready to start footin'.

The only real reason I want the open bow is some extra seating, however I'm not so sure I need it since we own lakeshore and could just as easily leave extras on the dock for the next run.

I'm a bit torn between a more pure ski/footin boat and a larger family style with open bow and more room. I'm feeling selfish and would prefer a pure ski boat.

Owning lakefront and buying an open bow seems foolish. Which would you rather be?

Tom,
Are you sure you want a Nautique?

Welcome to CCfan. If you do go through with a purchase, make sure you post some pictures.

I'm with Tim and HW on the open bow. Since you have lakefront property, leave the unneeded people on the dock.

Very high? Sheesh, Mr. "mystery-nonexistent-NWZ-deal-goggles" Benjamin! I don't think 11,5 for a decent all fiberglass boat (93) in good shape with a solid interior is too out of line.

My buddy had an open bow Malibu response, where you had to climb over like that. The bow essentially was where they stored stuff and where water was scooped up and entered the boat. I don't know if the Nautique's is more functional. I think I would prefer a Sport Nautique.

I don't think the SNOB is a good choice even if you want more seating... Assuming you're using the boat to ski. Who sits up front while there is a skier behind the boat? Sitting on the floor facing the skier is where extra passengers normally sit around here. A closed bow has more room for that scenario. We ski off the dock here... Closed bow all the way.

Joel, do I need to keep sending you reasonably priced NWZ's? I wish it their values were higher but sub-10k for a clean 90-93 is absolutely the norm. Snobs are incrementally higher but 11.5k would be tip top dollar, and tha boat is not clean enough to warrant it IMHO.

Although I do agree 11.5 is too high, it seems to be the norm right now. In fact, it seems to me 12k is the asking price right now for a NWZ in the southeast. Im finding the not bashful asking 15k.

Tim is in some fantasy world with his pricing mindset. The best part will be when he goes to sell his '90 and gets lowballed by the artificial market he created with all his lowball NWZ posts and comments. "The offer seems really in line considering all I've read on this CCFAN website, sir" By Tim's criteria his boat is worth about 5K max.

Also I do believe in a substantial premium for a '93+ over a 90-92 and I don't think that is unreasonable at all.

Being from eastern Iowa this one is only a days drive over and back. Seems priced right, only 157 hours? Must be a rebuild? What motor would this have in it?

I assume this one would get up to 40-45mph without a problem? Any other questions I should be asking?

Thanks

Gary, you're preaching to the choir. Unfortunately most people can't relate to buying a 20-25 year old boat with a big thing in the middle and will go for the jet boat. I think under 10K is where those early 90's boats should be.

I was seriously interested in buying a jet boat for my kids about 12 years ago. My wife said, "if you're going to buy one of those things, why don't you just buy a ski boat". I listened to her.

Does that ad really say "No Spooks"? LOL, unbelievable and hilarious.

These ski boats are not a "commodity" item. They didn't make that many even when they were new. Location, condition, features, and specific situations the buyer or seller may be (as well as their knowledge of the subject matter) in will cause a wild fluctuation in pricing from one to another. Generalizing that they should all be a certain price point, either (admittedly) high or low, seems a little bold and silly. I'll gladly "overpay" for the right boat in the right location because I like the boats more than the thrill of the deal. Each of these boats is pretty much a "one of one" for sale at that current time, which for the picky buyer makes it a seller's market. For somebody that just wants a deal and doesn't care about the boat, sure. Buyer's market for those. There were no real "steals" this fall on these unless they were beaters, and the few that meet my standards are "overpriced". I'm ready to overpay this spring for the right one and I won't regret the purchase.

I saw that and I can't imagine that means what you think it means, although I couldn't come up with anything else either.

I can justify paying a premium for a really nice boat, but I, like a lot of other people here are much more enthusiastic than most other buyers.

We found this 95 SN last year advertised for $15 but purchased for $13.5
100 original hours garage kept.
They are out there. I did end up having repairs that cost me another $1,000 by the time it was water worthy again.
Keep looking, buy now before boats jump into Summer pricing.
A well cared for 1,000 hour boat can be worth more than a 300 hour boat that was not taken care of. Proper maintenance and good winter storage technique is everything on boats.

I'm guessing he means no Craigslist scammers, I've sold a couple items on CL over the past couple months and as you could guess you get 10 scammers for every 1 legitimate inquiry.

I emailed this guy, he claims that it really has 157 original hours on it. Seems almost unreal for a 93. I might go take a look at it tomorrow.

What did you have to do to it Mark? and did you do the work yourself?

Our 1995 came to us with 100 hours but on first dip in the water we discovered a bent Prop shaft that they had run till it wore out the cutlass bearing in the strut. I really don't think they even knew it was bent, first time boat owners that parked it in the garage for 19 years. Yes all work done myself but with great advice and help from this forum. I was so happy with the condition of the hull and interior that it did not bother me to do the repairs. Also, all the struts, the thermostat and impeller needed replacement, again from sitting.
The trailer brakes needed new cylinders and a flush, minor stuff but all good now.

Tom - where are you guys from in the great state of IA? Good to see another member added to the Iowa Contingency!

If you're really interested in that Souix City boat let Bill (FanofCCFan) know as he's closer and already mentioned being able to go look at this boat for another member.

We've owned a SNOB and then upgraded to a 2001 Ski Nautique. Agree 100% with everyone here that the space in the bow isn't exactly ideal for skiing off a dock.

If you're passing thru Des Moines to see that boat and want to take a look at several others side-by-side for comparison let me know. Our old 96 SNOB and a few other 90+ Ski Nautiques (91 SN and 97 SN) are currently in storage at our boat club downtown Des Moines. I'm sure the guys wouldn't mind us lifting a few covers to take a look. If you're waiting till spring we can probably arrange a few test rides.

Tom - a bit after the fact, but I'll put my 2 cents in for '90's Sport Nautiques. For me a Sport with the extra size and usable open bow works better than a closed bow Ski would. I often have 2-3 adults and 3-4 kids in the boat. Yes, we could find a way to leave some people at the dock, but half the fun for the kids is all being together and watching each other, plus we tend to head to a calmer part of the lake to ski.

Slalom - I ski in closed bow Ski's with a few friends, awesome ski wake, better than my Sport. But, if I run the boat light with just 2 people in the boat while I ski, the wake is excellent, and I'm not good enough to really need the better wake.

So, in your search I'd suggest you look at a Sport for comparison. The '93-'97 Sports can be found in reasonably good condition for $12,000-$14,000 now, and '98-'00 for just a bit more.

Thanks for all the responses, very helpful.

I'm over in Cedar Rapids IA, havn't had a chance to go look at the one over in Sioux City yet.

I think my hesitation is in the speed of an open bow or any for that matter. Should i be looking exclusively for a pro boss motor to get 40--45 mph out of an open bow? Can I assume that any closed bow will archive 45 mph? I really think for my slalom needs any will provide a nice wake, its the footin speed that i also want to achieve.

Being in IA if II decide to buy now there will not be a test drive but the price should be right. Maybe i should just wait.

The open bow Sports run mid 40's with pro boss (285 HP) or GT-40 (310 HP). I'm not a barefooter so can't offer any insight there, but there's not a major speed difference between the 20 ft. Ski's and 21 ft. Sports given similar power. It sounds like you need the HP for what you want to do, so yes you should look for the higher output engines.

Just another data point...our sport runs mid 40s with 2 adults and a full tank of gas. We enjoy the open bow, but I don't really like running with more than 4 adults on board in anything other than calm conditions. The open bow isn't a typical walk-through, which is inconvenient for adults. If this boat were smaller, I'd probably prefer the closed bow setup. Having said that, riding up in the bow is a nice sensation in good weather.

Freeboard at the stern seating positions is not much, which would make me a little concerned for small children or inexperienced passengers on rougher days/more aggressive maneuvers. Granted, I'm coming from driving 40 foot express cruisers weighing close to 20,000#, so everything seems rough, loud, and a little scary by comparison.

Thanks again for all the help.

He has come down in price, then, because this is the same boat for $15,999.

Go to barefoot central .com That is a pretty popular tower for barefoot boats, and there is a boom that attaches to it.

Posted By: storm34

Pretty much any Ski Nautique with the exception of the early boats (60's & 70's) with the skinny pylon. It's still possible with the right boom clamp.

If you ask me that boat is over priced and the big tower reduces it's value. If you're looking for an open bow start looking for Sports. The Ski Nautique Open Bow was a great idea but the space isn't useful a majority of the time you're on the water.

Help me understand what the drawback of the tower is. Do they just make the boat look ugly? Is it a personal preference to keep the boat as pure to its original form as possible or is there a functional difference in how the boat performs with the tower?

Having never had one I tend to think it would be useful to keep the extra skis up there but maybe its not as convenient as it looks and maybe it causes other problems.

Posted By: Hollywood

Carrying around extra skis is as helpful as extra people. Just go back to the dock.

One of the biggest drawbacks is parking/storage. Added weight doesn't help either.

Towers are definitely a personal preference item, nobody is right or wrong, just some like them, some don't. I use a Flightpipe on my Sport, find it very easy to use and quick to put up and take down. As for storing skis/boards, I've got a lot of storage in my boat so we can make skis disappear under the passenger seat or ski locker, boards can go in the trunk though usually put them on the starboard side of the doghouse.

But, when I'm in boats with towers, I get the convenience. Nothing to put up or take down, storage outside of the boat, place for speakers if you want them.

There are certainly some towers that are just ugly, that's a different story.

I know a couple of us have said this already, but I'd really like to see you check out a Sport before you buy an open bow Ski Nautique.

Tommy, that's a v-drive Super Sport rather than a direct drive Sport Nautique. More geared toward wakeboard than slalom, others here can tell you more about the wake, I've never been in one.

I will say that there may be a number of people here that would be tempted to jump on that boat for under 10 grand. Looks like it will need an interior at some point, but otherwise looks to be in good shape.

Well now I know what a V-drive is. That must explain the rear mounted engine.

I dont think thats right for me. I found this one in TN, Sport, GT-40

Hard to see much in those pictures, but looks OK. $13,300 is a good starting point if in good mechanical and cosmetic shape so you don't have to spend much on it in the 1st few years. He says OBO so you might be able to own that boat for $11,800 or something like that. I'm pretty sure that's a '96 or '97.

Sports - the '93 and newer have no wood in them, all composite stringers, so no worries about rot. '93-'97 are the style like the one in that ad, slanted back and no trunk. '98-'02 have a squared off back and a large trunk for storage. The trunk is an awesome feature, on my boat a ton of stuff disappears into the trunk. But, I wouldn't hesitate to buy the earlier version and, just personal opinion here, I think the slant backs are nicer looking boats on the water.

Due to the intake manifold that's a 95 or possibly an early 96

Tommy,

Regarding Towers, the good: High tow point ideal for everything except slalom & trick, board/ski racks for storage and a place to hang speakers, place to mount bimini, when towing from tower people can sit in the backseat, ideal location for stern/all around light
the bad: makes covering a pita, added weight, bug catcher when towing, may need to be folded for lift/garage clearance

Regarding Sport vs SN Open Bow, have owned both and for my use the SNOB is it, both great boats however SNOB has better tracking/handling, slalom wake & may run a touch faster - Sport has more space & better storage and a touch bigger board wake.

Posted By: TommySki
Date Posted: March-11-2015 at 12:57pm
One vote for Sport and one for SNOB. I don't really care one way or the other about the tower.

How much difference is there in the wake between the two? I'm no professional skier but I also don't want to leave the water while cutting the wake either. Speed sounds comparable, I am looking at the ProBoss or GT-40 which it sounds like will achieve mid 40s in either.

Posted By: Gary S
Date Posted: March-11-2015 at 1:27pm
Keep in mind like Tim said in his post on the first page on a SNOB you have to climb over the dash to get to the front seating. The Sport you just walk thru to the front. Any of these choices IMOH will be a better wake than you have experenced before, they are after all Nautiques

Tommy,
if you wait for enough votes from this crowd on these two different boats, you'll grow old.

Not many have owned or operated a SNOB. Its actually one of the more odd SN's made. The reports are true, the cockpit is smaller, and the bow, although open, isn't big enough but maybe for 2 small kids. The issues I had with one is that in rougher water, it was very simple to swamp the nose in the chop.

If you want to make sure that you have enough room, forget the SNOB and go to a higher HP Sport and enjoy the water with more people. By putting a few up front while skiing, you'll still have a nice enough wake and enough room in the boat.. You would quickly find fault in the snob and want to upgrade, as I did..

Love the white hull but IMO too high priced for a '99, and sounds like a questionable trailer. If he'd take less it's certainly a good looking boat, appears to be taken care of. Need to know hours and some engine pics.

From my personal experience...... the only people who will fit up front in the "tea-cup" are children ages 12 or younger. If you have a bimini top, good luck crawling through to the front. The only adults that fit were passed out drunk ! Minimal storage and rather cramped main cockpit.... but otherwise one awesome ride with plenty of power .....and loads of "cool boat" comments from the Nautique fans on the lake.

That Nashville sport has been listed for a month or so. I keep seeing in in the local craigslist. It is actually in Smithville, which is a small town next to Center Hill Lake --- a wonderful lake. It is a lake where you would want a tower because there are no docks, just huge marina. It is also really deep so likely has never touched bottom.

I like this one too and its a bit closer. I wish there were more pictures of the interior.

It sounds like the one posted above has had some recent maintenance done which is nice and he'd probably come down on price. I too don't particularly like the single spotter seat. I assume that there is typically a bench there?

Any other thoughts? Looking to haul one home in the next week or so.

Also it doesn't look like he has it posted on Craigslist either. It's between these two boats. Pretty much the same, however they KY one appears to have had some considerable maintenance and replacements done to the motor. I don't like the spotters seat.

Much as I love that purple Sport, I guess the spotter seat would bother me as well. At first I didn't think so, you could add the little jump seat that fits between the seats, I did that on mine. But, it would look strange, and the bucket spotter seat takes up more room so not sure it would fit. So, I'd go with the Nisswa Sport. Have you been able to get pictures of the interior to make sure it has the "normal" spotter seat?

The listing for the purple boat is by a broker, Brandon Cruse of central Kentucky inboards, ‪859-396-0518‬

Posted By: rebel skier
Date Posted: March-19-2015 at 1:16pm
I see the add on Only Inboard's too. When I google that number 859-396-0518 a couple of other boats come up too. Also I see a website Central Kentucky Inboards. Lastly, I see that in the past Brandon has an account here and has posted boats here under the nicknames of "nautigue dad" and "big wake".

Bummer, I thought that was a personal owner boat.

Last I checked, central ky inboards operates out of his house- he's a broker, not a dealer. Not sure if he handles paperwork but I'm not sure he does much more than marketing. He certainly doesn't see the boats hes selling in person- he doesn't stock anything. Purely a web business I think.

I guess thats fine. I'm headed up to see this one next week. Its listed at $10,995, this seems to be a reasonable asking price based on what I have seen for mid 90's sports with 600+ hours in good shape. However I have no way of knowing how to value this boat. I'd like to think I could get it for more in the $9500 range.

I kind of do,will they at least run it on a hose? Maybe it would help if you could get it for 10. Don't want to scare you off but some things won't show up with out one, stiff steering, prop or shaft vibration. Are they including the sport nautique side decals? Are you mechanically inclined to do some work if needed? Has it had recent service, fuel filter, impeller, cap, plugs? Just some things to think about

Posted By: TommySki
Date Posted: March-22-2015 at 11:34pm
Based on other '93 sports its not a steal at the current price, I'm hoping to get it for closer to 10. All I was told is that it was checked out by their techs and was worth taking in on trade. Although I am mechanically able to do about anything to it I'd prefer not to for at least this coming season.

Unfortunately I don't believe the ice is out on the lakes in northern MN yet however if it is I'll request a test drive. I'm calling again tomorrow to see if I can get any other information out of them.

Thanks for all the help.

The boat's in very good shape. Interior was all in good repair. Prop turns freely, gel coat is clean with no scratches and they had the new sport decals.

The engine is clean all around, no rust or leaks, fresh oil and the pan was spotless. Trailer is solid with no rust, tires are a little cracked but still lots a tread. Obviously this was a garage stored boat that was well maintained.

just got home, the 93 sport is now in my garage.

Thanks to all for the great advise that lead me to this boat.
