I have looked..so shoot me if I missed it. I am looking to replace my bearings on 86 SN 2001 trailer. It is the original trailer with 6 lug hub. What do I need? Does this trailer have brakes? I will have the boat off of it most of this weekend so seems like a good time to replace the bearings, brakes, leaf springs or anything else prone to failure. The main reason is grease shot up all over my boat a few weeks ago. I would rather replace them now then wait for them to lock up driving down the road. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Philip

Replace ALL the leaf spring bolts & nylon bushings. Use Grade 8 bolts. I had an original bolt fail on my '87 this summer.

Best way to know what size bearings you have is to pull them out and look at the numbers. Plus, you then know if you have brakes, and if any of the brake hardware needs to be replaced.

Glen,
Be careful with this. Most people assume grade 8 is best not understanding the tensile strengths of bolts. In order to get the tensile up for a 8, they also become brittle and in shear will break at times. In our stamping dies, there are spots where the tool makers will drop down to a grade 5 since the 8's break. Stick with the bolts sold by the trailer parts supplies. Did someone tell you to use grade 8 or are you just assuming they would be better?

Here are the NAPA part #'s I have for replacement everything for a 87'CC trailer. I can't imagine a 86 is any different but you never know. They should work your trailer as well. This should get you started in the right direction.

Inner Bearing 25580 Race 25520
Outer Bearing 15123 Race 15245
Oil Seal 47017

Some trailers have brakes, most don't.
You NEED to know before you hitch it up!

Pete,
The grade 8's came from a trailer parts supplier, but thanks for the tip.

Glen,
Then it sounds like you are good to go! The one that broke, was it a grade 8? If so, maybe the trailer supplies should rethink their bolts?

Could have been a Chinese grade 8

Looking at your pics on carpet redo your trailer doesn't have brakes I personally have never seen one with the factory option.. Don't waste your time on replacing springs like someone stated unless yours have (flattened out) you can source new spring hanger bushings if your hangers are worn and touching the frame with boat on trailer.

All 6 bolts were original CC. Still had red paint on them from the factory. I really don't know what grade the original bolts were. The heads were naked! No ANSI marks whatsoever.

I really can't believe they would have been grade 1 or 2, they would have been much too soft for the load they see.

The original nylon spacers were the hat style, but I went with full length bushings.

I had trouble finding these as the 3/4" eyes in the leaf springs are non-standard or an older design/configuration.

My trailer didn't have brakes from the factory, but I added them the year I bought her. They really make a difference using a Chevy Blazer/Trailblazer to pull her!

Glen
Glen,
Really too soft?

"First, unlike tensile and yield strengths, there are no published shear strength values or requirements for ASTM specifications. The Industrial Fastener Institute (Inch Fastener Standards, 7th ed. 2003. B-8) states that shear strength is approximately 60% of the minimum tensile strength."

BTW, The tensile of a grade 2 is 60,000 psi. Figure out the area of your bolt and the go by the 60% figure. Keep in mind there are two shear point on each bolt so you can multiply by two.

I'd have to say something was misaligned for you to break that original bolt.

Perhaps I was a little quick to say grade 2 were too soft. Going back to fundamentals in static loading in pure shear, I calculate a factor of safety for grade 2 bolts > 16 (which really surprised me!). Dynamic loading effects and the wear created on the bolts as the rear shackles pivot which reduces the cross sectional area also need to be considered.

For the modest difference in price; grade 2 @ $0.55, grade 5 @ $0.86 and grade 8 @ $1.33, grade 8 all the way to protect my baby!

No alignment issue. Just a fatigue failure. See the pic of the bolt from the other side that was destined to fail as well!

Just to add a little more info on bearings

If you have Dexter 8-213 hubs with 6 bolts (the numbers are cast into the rear face of the hub between the lugs) like my 87 DV-4 trailer the proper bearings are the;

25580 inner bearing cone
25520 inner Race
67048 outer bearing cone
67010 outer bearing race.

The difference between a 67048/67010 outer and the 15123 cone and the 15245 outer race is the 15245 outer race is 2.441 " in diamer, and the 67010 is 2.328" in diameter. The 8-213 hubs have a step indside the hub about an inch back in from the hub face and the larger 15245 race won't fit over that step.

Actually got confirmation that the PO replaced the bearings along with new tires right before I picked up the boat in July..so I should be good to go for a while.
