96 SN EFI Timing

Replacing the distributor.
Could I get some verification on whether this procedure is correct in my craft.

1. starboard/forward plug out
2. press thumb against hole
3. manually crank engine clockwise
4. feel it burp past my thumb
5. align timing pointer to TC on balancer
6. insert distributor with rotor contact pointing to 1 on the distributor "bowl" once seated
7. clamp it snug
8. install cap making sure that the rotor is pointing to 1 on the top of the cap (and wire).
9. remove spout
10. start (assuming it starts)
11. timing light on balancer and loosen clamp a little to allow timing to 10 btdc (or is it 5?)
12. clamp it
13. shut off
14. clamp it tightly
15. replace spout
16. replace rubber cover
17. close up

Ford based 5.8 litre "GT-40" engine? (most common)
or
GM/Chev based 5.7 litre "Pro Ski" engine? (relatively uncommon)

On the Ford small-block, the #1 cylinder is front left (nearest driver's seat)
On the Chev small-block, the #1 cylinder is front right (nearest observer's seat)

It's easier with 2 people. You've got the basics covered.

I believe he just used left and right looking from front of boat to aft.

You're mixing up Fords and Chevys again JQ or maybe left and right


For KENO’s benefit—looking from the front (harmonic balancer end) of the engine to the rear...#1 cylinder on Ford is LEFT and #1 on Chev is RIGHT.

Better now?

I guess using your inverse backwards point of view, the driver's seat would be on the left and the prop on your boat would rotate to the left also .

I think you have a link to the manual from sometime in the past, Look at page 3D-12 and it has instructions and 5 degrees with the spout unplugged is the Ford number.

Or click on the GT40 manual in the reference section and go to the page mentioned above.

Engine manufacturers read Left or Right Bank as if you were standing on the flywheel looking forward to the water pump.

The other way to verify is to look down at the heads from the front of the engine,
Looking down at the water pump you will notice one head is forward of the other head.
It is about 1" forward.   The forward head, forward spark plug is always #1 on a V6 or V8 regardless of GM or Ford.
