Thought I would ask here. mainly because Im lazy and Google has too much information.. most of it wrong.

1991 Toyota pickup. 2.4L 22RE
Just completed a full rebuild on the engine for my oldest sons truck... That's right fells.. Cam is gonna be sharing the highway soon. I'm still looking for old mattresses to tie all over the truck.

Like I said.. Full re build. Bored 30 over, new pistons, new cam, turned the crank, new valves, seats and springs, new tappets , new timing set new pretty much damn near everything.

So reading the Yota forums it appears that a long and overly anal break in is recommended when rebuilding with all new parts. Low weight multi grade with a high zinc package is also recommended. However I didnt get read on what to use. Most things I read were additives. Yuck. All the oils on our FAQ page are heavy weights for our boats.
Does anyone know of a Off the shelf oil I can buy that will do the job?
Thanks.
John

My New motor shipped with Joe Gibbs Oil for the first 5 hours of run time, it claims to have the zinc and break in additives needed for flat tappets.   I think mine is a 15w50, but they may have other weights in the same brand.

why yuck to additives? I mostly use lucas break in oil / zinc additive. I have never seen or heard anything bad about it with any real reasoning behind any claims other than opinion.

what oil do you plan to run in it after break in?

Any good quality dino oil (non synthetic) + Lucas Engine Break-in Oil Additive - TB ZINC PLUS. Or, Lucas has a 30 weight engine break-in oil with high zinc/ZDDP. Royal Purple also makes a good engine break-in oil. For on-going ZDDP levels, Royal Purple HPS - High Performance Street oil has high ZDDP levels for after the break-in period. Good to go.

What was used for an assembly lube? I like Joe Gibbs.

Gibbs was used in the build.
Ill run Royal Purple once broken in but that's a few oil changes away if I follow the rules.
Lucas and Valvoline .. done.
Thanks

Thats a good bet. Always ask on ccf first haha. Even better i like to type correct craft fan as a keyword after my search. Easier than using the on site search for me.
By the way im pretty sure royal purple is made in some guys bathtub and should be certain of it before pouring it into a new engine. Just my opinion though.
