I would use a relay rated for the obviously high current you are drawing. Use the switch to activate the relay and let the relay contacts handle the current , or better yet an SSR might be better as they don't have not contacts in the traditional sense. I could ask a colleague but you you'd be able to google a bridge circuit . Biggest question I why are you drawing so much current? |

Bill, The relay did cross my mind but they are typically rated for 30 amps unless I went to a large power relay. With the typical automotive 30 amp, I feel I'd have the same problem with the relay contacts. I have seen and used plenty of RC networks protecting relay contacts on AC but didn't know if the preferred DC protection is a diode or a RC network. You mention "bridge circuit" and I'm assuming you are referring to a full wave bridge used for rectification? That is not an appropriate application for contact protection. I did google and was not able to find a decent answer. Considering your occupation stated in your profile I thought you could comment. I evidently misinterpreted your occupation. Sorry |

The diode you speak of is more to sink back emf on the energizing cuircuit when switched off, the mag field collapses. It can hit electronics and blow lighted switches. It doesn't do anything to help on the contact side.
If welding together, best verify the primary is seeing rated voltage whne energized, else it will happen with a bigger relay, less clamping force. There are some constant duty cycle relays much like a starting relay, but more metal. Used them in a switched main for a rescue vehicle accessory buss with success. |

It was a trick question anyway - either would work depending on the application - which we are not privy to - if y0u don't need to stop the motor fast and its a mechanical switch then a simple diode will do it.

Tom and Joe,
Thanks for the input but, you seem to disagree on the diode. It's the same I got when I googled looking for the preferred method. Tom, Checking the voltage to the load was the first thing I checked when the first switch failed. It checked good. Joe, I don't understand about the "trick question". |

My primary focus is electro/mechanical so I do a bit of both. Wasn't expecting an electrical engineering pop quiz when i signed up. All i wanted to do was merely seek advice on my boat. This is the main reason I typically avoid forums, so many "experts" See ya.... |

Talk about thin skinned. Geez dude....Yes, there are MANY EXPERTS on here that I wouldn't hesitate to call if I had a problem as I have their phone # Glad to see you recognized that. You came here for advice from the experts and get all bent outta shape when they try to help you and possibly many others who read this thread because they expand on the topic a little bit. THAT is how you LEARN! Being 56 you should know that.....Don't let the door hit you in your Stern on your way out! |

And we tried to help with your damper plate problem however, we asked some questions to help us and they weren't answered. For example, your slow crank and what batteries you were using. Deep cycle or starting? Condition? |

Could a bad damper be narrowed down with doing a "listening probe" with a long screwdriver?

I feel like we'll never get an answer. Boat will probably be sold as is and even if he gets informed of the problem I doubt it will get posted. We seem to have offended him with all the helpful diagnosing questions that never got answered.

Yeah bunch of real helpful D-Bags you got here,,, Like to see any of them keep up on 2 wheels with me, love to watch as they end up on their head in a corner.... Nope won't bother posting ever again, not worth the aggravation dealing with trolls / keyboard cowboys. |

Seriously though, they all mean well as I believe you do, perhaps you could get your questions back on track by telling us where you are at this point?? |

Clearly not a Dale Carnegie graduate. Agreed, sometimes the threads go off on a tangent, but the wizards rarely fail in coming back to a correct solution.
Speaking of tangents, i fail to see any possible correlation between some self-professed motorcycling skills and fixing a old broken boat |
