Can someone tell me the proper way to remove this steering wheel from a 71 Baracuda? I don't want to damage it.

Take a real close look where that center cap meets the hub you will see a wire clip,much like a circlip. Pull it out with a small screwdriver or a sharp awl. Once that's out the center cap will come off and you'll see the hub and the nut.
