Last weekend I blew the damper plate in my boat. I have ordered a new damper plate. I know it's behind the bell housing on the flywheel. What is the easiest way to do the repair? Do I need to pull the engine and transmission out of the boat first or can it be done without having to that? Any advice would be appreciated.
Many thanks. |

I find it is easier to pull both motor and transmission at the same time.
Then it's a lot easier to strip it down to the fly wheel replace the damper, line everything up and put it all back in in one piece. |

.....but pulling the motor isn't necessary. You will need to support the motor using blocks of wood or something as you will need to bust lose the aft mounts. Tranny hasta' come out and its a heavy sucker so have an extra set of hands if able.
Once you replace it get it all back together and be sure to check the shaft alignment. Watch Pete's video a couple times and you should have it back good as new in no time. |

I agree with Tim that pulling the engine isn't needed. I did a damper at New Years (northern Wisconsin)in the boathouse with a tarp over me and an electric heater. Wow, that metal was still COLD!!
Loosen up the mounts. Jack the aft end of the engine up with bottle jacks under the manifolds. Remove the trans and bell housing and you will be looking at the damper plate. Hopefully you purchased a Sachs plate. |
