With the heat today and the stress on our electric, I think some areas may be seeing brownouts or even blackouts. I just measured the volts here and it's down slightly. I typically see around 130 and now I'm getting 123. It will be interesting to see if it drops farther during the day.

Good luck. Do you have a generator? Gonna be 100 here this weekend as well.

Eeekkk! How far are you from the roadway? Down here the greedy bastards crank the voltage way up. I typically see 247 on a delta. What gave you the idea to check it?

Chris,
I'm not at all worried. Here in northern Wi. the area is just on the tip of the worst heat in the nation. The Midwest to the east coast is where concern is needed. My taking the voltage readings is just out of curiosity I have a long way to go before I would consider the volts in the "brown" area. Yes, I have a whole house generator. but that's more for a winter back up. No AC in the house so backup would only help the refrigerator and freezer.

Todd,
Yes, they have pushed the volts over the years. It sure is their easy way to get the power out there without infrastructure improvement.

I just got 241 at the panel and my service drop is only about 150' form the 4160. Interesting I also just got 121 (on both legs) so, that's an increase from my previous reading. I suspect they cranked up a peaker up here.

Our electric company has decided to charge ridiculous Peak hour charges.
From 4 PM to 8 PM they have nearly doubled the rates while slightly lowering the rates off peak.
Just what you want, get off work and come home to cool off and it costs double.

I am playing with my thermostats and experimenting with lowering the house temps from 2-4 PM then shutting it off till 8 PM.   We have not exceeded 100 yet in the new billing system but so far that is working. Cool it off to 74 before the shut down and the temps inside rise to about 79 by 8 PM when AC kicks back on to cool off for bed.

A major heat wave with no AC, I feel for you guys, you better spend the night out on the lake! Get a ski in early before going to work.

It's maybe one or two days a summer I feel "pain". Today might be one of them but currently is a pleasant 83 and the humidity is at 60%. With the lake 75 feet from the house on one side and then on the other side another lake 200 feet from the house I get a nice cooling effect. Hence, the reason for no AC.

Pete

Over here around Minocqua..it's 86F currently...and humid..yUCK. My oldest boys are back at home at our place down in LaCrosse. THey are expected to see heat index of 105 or so today. I told them to keep house closed up, curtains closed, so the central air doesn't have to work so hard. Tomorrow will be DEFINITE relief for us I think.

We were going to take the boat out, but I think we MAY just walk down to the beach and hang in the water for a couple hours before the storms roll in later tonight.

We (Deep Lake Ski Guys) from 11:30 to 3PM. Everybody skied three times. We jumped in to cool off once in awhile too. Life is good. What heat?

Pete, your property sure makes me jealous.   I love the lake views, I have seen the winter pics so I know it is not great all the time but your summers sure look good on the water.
Good luck with the heat waves.

We made it through our "heat wave" up here. A cold front came through the area last night along with some mild T storms. Looking at the weather throughout the US, it looks like others still have the heat. We never got to the point of having even a slight "brown out". The lowest reading I got 120. The only issue yesterday and then today is my Frontier internet. They must be having some problems!! It took me at least 5 minutes to get this posted!

Mark,
I love the winter too.

You can thank your utility regulators and the legislators for that. When Cali went away from coal-fired generation, power cost significantly increased. Too many uninformed folks think that you can eat rainbows and poop unicorns -- just because you WANT to. Up-front capital cost for renewable energy infrastructure isn't cheap.

Wow. It was in the 90’s and we were playing some funky frisbee beer game when the cold front arrived with a 20 degree drop and 30+ gusts with whitecaps! Then the waves and wind came to test my lousy Qualified Captain knots (which held!). Now we are supposed to get the severe thunderstorm warning and who knows what.

Hope to get back out when it passes!

My liver can handle a little alcohol now and then. My engines can’t stomach the stuff that sits in the tank for 8 months straight. Some folks on Deep Lake can stomach a lot more alcohol than I can—and they know who they are.
There’s no reason to substitute 10% of gasoline with corn-based fuel. We did that when we thought we’d either run out of the stuff or would have to fight wars to get it. Now we produce the most oil in the world and in another 20, reduced demand for the stuff is going to make it cheaper than a bottle of water. We don’t need to turn food into fuel and we don’t need to mine our topsoil for it either. Gimme gas without the alcohol.

Gary,
They all say that they don't have a problem with alcohol!

Just got power back on from the storm . Tree fell on power line close to the lake and we had a nice little fire up there . To bad that I didn't have any marshmallows handy.
