1990 Nautique 351 PCM transmission 550 hours.. Read all the threads about the whine due single exhaust,. type of oil, maybe adding more soundproofing ect. . The trans has red oil with the placard about 20 weight. Can anything be done to quite the whine under 2500 rpm, would you suggest changing the oil to 20 wt? I can live with the noise with ear plugs, requesting some info from the forum who corrected this problem. Randy

Transmission fluid comes in weights? Did I miss something here? The whine 90% probability is coming from the reduction gear. It is what it is. Now back to the fluid.....

1.23 Transmissions originally called for 20W oil not trans fluid. Dex/Merc is a perfectly fine substitute and I believe factory offering as of late.

The whine is from the straight cut gears. No oil is going to silence it. Nature of the beast.

Edit - The PO of my old '89 told me he had the transmission reduction gears replaced, due to noise. The trans shop owner later told me that the gears were badly eroded. As I recall, he thought they were made from powdered metal.

Pete - this is what the (crooked) church lady did to Barney! Just saw that episode a few weeks ago!
