looking to rebuild or replace starter on a 454, found some left hand rotation startes new at around $190. All i need is a brush set assembly,as my starter springs are shot, rusted in to a non usable condition. Any one know a place   for starter parts?

If you ever drive through Apopka might be worth stopping at Millikan Battery and see what they have.

Assuming you have a reverse rotation Pleasurecraft 454 in the Martinique (it would have come from Correct Craft that way), it would have a rear entry starter and this diagram in the link would help you out with what rotation starter you would need if you decide to buy another one. It would be a clockwise rotating starter if all the above is accurate

link

And here's a link to the Arco starter that would be appropriate or you could cross reference to other brands

Just to be sure,

A reverse rotation 454 has a firing order of 1 2 7 5 6 3 4 8 going clockwise around the distributor cap.

Is that what you have?

Good, so you know what you have and what will work for a starter if you can't find parts for your present starter

Late to the party and I see you got the parts from Milliken.
Good guys at TRS on silver star rd, Orlando. Was an old Scottys lumber. They can rebuild it for you if you run into challenges.

And if you were to want to save a little more money and a bit of weight too, you could get one of these gear reduction starters in the link.

It says it cross references with the original PCM Reverse rotation starter RA122008 and a pile of others including the Arco 30456

I'd take the chance too. I'm glad to hear that someone's going the rebuild route and keeping it original.    As long as the field windings show continuity and the armature tests good on the growler, then the rebuild will work. Speaking of a growler, I'd say there's a good chance Ken has used one many times and in fact may even have one!

If it is a 27 MT it probably means a couple of things

One is that it's for starting big beefy diesels

Another is that you'll probably never find anything that says it's a marine starter with proper spark protection and USCG approval

If you find marine applications/approval, post it here, it'll be good info

Good thing I said probably since the link below is to a marine 27MT for a marine diesel engine.

Wrong rotation and wrong number of teeth but it looks like there are some marine 27MT's out there

link

Edit................ But a marine diesel starter isn't required to be ignition protected like one for a gasoline engine so that leads you to wonder about using a 27MT with a gas engine in a boat.

I don't know much about diesels but why don't they need to have spark protection on their starters?

Like the flash point link from Pete above says, the flash point is higher and diesel fuel won't cause an explosion nearly as easily as gas.

Because of this gasoline is classified as a flammable liquid, and diesel fuel isn't, strange as that might sound.

A diesel fuel leak in a boat's engine compartment can most definitely start a fire if it's spraying onto a hot enough surface like the exposed non water jacketed part of an exhaust manifold but it won't cause an explosion.

Kinda like an oil burner in a house or garage.

A fine spray of oil on the igniter makes a fire and doesn't cause your boiler to explode.
