New to site and just purchased a 1965 CC barracuda I think? From all of the info I think it is. But here is my problem the boat came with a 260 ford I recently picked up a 289 ford not even thinking about rotation yup I screwed up! It's a regular rotation motor. Now I have a decision to make do I go with a 318 poly motor with left hand rotation or rebuild the 289 and build it left rotation??

Is the 289 a complete marine engine? Why not rebuild it into a righty

Hi Jim

It sounds to me like maybe you're mixed up on rotation direction of a marine engine.

Your regular rotation 289 engine would be a LH rotating engine when viewed from the rear. That's the marine way of looking at rotation..............from the rear. So looking from the front a regular automotive rotation is turning to the right

Your 260 was probably a reverse rotating engine that turns to the right from the rear or from the front it turns to the left.

As far as the left hand rotation 318 you'll have to verify which way the engine rotates with the info given above.

Your head's probably spinning in 2 different directions after reading this

Building the 289 for reverse rotation won't be totally straight forward because of the knurling or wick marks on the normal rotation crankshaft being wrong for a reverse rotation engine.

Gary S will come along with some words of wisdom about what his solution for this was.

There's plenty of info on CCF about what you want to do

Edit I see Gary's already here

I don't want to rebuild the 260 I would rather the 289 but if the boat is a barracuda I should do a 318 to be correct?

Maybe pictures are needed so you can verify just what model you have.

As far as the engine, only you know what your budget is and how "correct" you want to make things

318 reverse rotation Chryslers aren't exactly a dime a dozen and parts aren't very easy to find either.

Marine engines have been derived from automotive engines for many years. It's basically bolt on's that make a engine marine and not it's rotation.

Yes, as Ken mentioned, pictures are needed. What's the length? I'm going with what you have is a Mustang.

Jim,
If it's a 1965, the 16.5 length would make the boat a Classic model and several V8 Interceptor Fords were available (listed). Pictures are needed.

Click the full reply editor. It's the slanted arrow icon above the quick reply Then click on the icon of the tree with the up arrow. A browse box will come up allowing you to select anything off your computer.

Works for me. What did you do after you clicked on the tree? Did you select a picture and then click OK?

Read again. There are two icons with arrows.

Try following the directions in this link to an old thread.

When you get to the 3rd step where the big arrow is pointing at browse, it may say "choose file" instead of "browse" in that box. Click on that box and continue following his instructions.

This works on a desktop or laptop.

It doesn't work on a phone, tablet etc.

Some devices will not use the website's routine. There is an easy workaround once you learn how to "code" html. It is easy. You need to tell web browsers that you intend to reference another url. (Your picture). The first set of [ ] define the start of the img tag. Then your Http reference. Then the last set of [ ] tell browsers that the image tag is ending with [/img]. This is the structure of html. TheRe are tags for bold, colors, links, etc.

Try this:
Click reply.
Then click on the pic of the tree. Then just click "ok".
Notice the txt that appears. This is the html (hypertext mark up language) tag for rendering an image to a webpage. < IMG]http://[/IMG > . This one is using the wrong outer brackets, but I am posting it for those who are reading

If you switch to "basic mode" from "prompt mode" (drop down button a few to the right of tree), you will get the same without the start of your Http url reference. Once you understand this, you can type the img ref yourself and not use the buttons. On a phone, the prompt and tree method give you a larger target to highlight with your finger to paste over.

If you upload your pics using this site in the control panel, zoom out and on some device you will now realize there is an entire right side of the page you do not see. You will even see your uploaded pics.
Select your pic from your directory. Click and hold on the preview of the pic and then open in new browser window. Highlight your url in the address bar and copy it.
Now take that back to your post. Paste it into the image tag between the ][ where the http:// was.

Your close. You need to view your pic in another web tab so you get the whole url: to copy. something like this
http://correctcraftfan.com/forum/uploads/17712/20170715_160512.jpg
See yours is just the local file name to ccfan (after the last / )

There was a bellhousing change from 260 and early 298 to later 289 engines and those afterward. Relevant, just not something to not freak over if things look odd to you.

Also 260 and 289 have the same stroke, so you can use the backerds 260 crank in the 289 block to make a reverse 289.

finally got some pics of the boat up I think its a 1965 barracuda not sure couldn't pass on this one got it for 400 bucks has a 65 ford 260 with 289 heads looks like the original trailer and the tires. just purchased a 65 289 complete ready to go to the machine shop and while that's being done I'am putting in new douglas fur stringers and a new floor. That should keep me out of trouble this winter.

Jim,
Glad you got the picture posting figured out. Thanks for the pictures. keep them coming especially when you get into the stringer replacement. Do you have any pictures of the engine? Do you think it was the original engine? Yes, it sure looks like a Barracuda.

Posted pics from my home computer worked fine I will take more pics of the inside of the boat and engine before I start. Thanks for the info was thinking it was a barracuda. Think I should go with a 289 or 318 to keep it original?
