Installed my Quick Fuel M600 this weekend. Quick settings of float level and idle screws, plus some fiddling with the throttle linkage, and she's running stronger than ever. I was born after the advent of fuel injection, so this was my first four barrel carb installation. Way easier than expected.

I wanna say that the Stern ladder wasn't standard til 74'. A handrail wrapped the stern in 73 and the ladder was added in 74.

Was the factory transom ladder available on Mustangs? I have noticed some on the older boats. Was just curious.

That is one good looking Mustang. Love the floor shift and throttle unit that they used in that era.
ps: put some S/S button head screws in the extra engine cover hinge holes and nobody will know the difference.

Chris, Smart call in my book. I'm always asked WHY I don't put a platform on my 72 Mustang. I always inform them that it ain't happening as it wasn't an option and I just can't drill holes in the boat. ( why it doesn't have a Bimini either). Dude, how do you get back in the boat? Old school Baby!!!

I go back and forth on the platform. The boat looks better without it, but I used the platform on our old Malibu a lot and I miss having it. We normally take the pontoon if we are skiing, swimming, or going to the sandbar...but I'd likely use the Mustang occasionally for those activities if I had the option.

Mark - forgot to respond to the other part of your post. Yes, my engine cover has another set of holes. The other side of the hinges pulled out of the plywood floor panel and the previous owner moved them. My cover has been cut and widened about 4" to accommodate the 351W.

I'm always glad to hear about the no platform on 1st generation hulls. To me, they just don't look appropriate.

Decided to hold off on the platform for now. I still have it in my shed, along with a set of non quick release brackets. After using the boat all last summer I didn’t really miss the platform, and don’t like the idea of drilling into the hull.

I LOVE those fiberglass engine covers. I happened to notice the hinges on yours were moved inboard, as evidence by a pair of mounting holes not filled in. How goes the platform install. Consider using the quick-release mounting brackets.

Never saw this question sorry Chris. Not sure it says nothing in the brochure. I think some had a barometer if I recall correctly. Maybe someone else knows,Tim??

Got the Mustang back in the water last weekend. Installed my new windshield from UPD. Fitment is good, took just minor fiddling to get it in place. My new fuel gauge works great. Nice to have fuel level without dipping a stick in the tank. If any of you have your tank our, spend the $75 to add an electronic fuel gauge. Quick Fuel M600 will go on in the next few weeks. It was supposed to go on this past weekend, but the weather was nice so I spend time on the water instead.

Gary, thanks for the info. Your boat is gorgeous, though I understand what you're saying about the console reducing interior space. The only storage space on my boat is under the dash - I always keep the passenger seat facing backwards. The picture of the '68 SS dash shows four large round gauges - one tach and three speedos?

Were there any smaller holes around the big one?



A spot light at one time could also explain any extra holes in the dash for a on/off switch?

That hole in the front is a mystery to me I didn't take photo's of it before I started and I can't find anything that fits it. I think it was a navigation light that was installed by a previous owner . I could have filled it in before I painted it but its too late now. What do you think the best way to cover the hole is ?. Install a accessory or make a cover?

Yea but I’m driving from the wrong side, must be the English model I would not say more deluxe at least on the standard Mustangs. Your boat was built and marketed to the genuine hard core skier. Mustangs IMOH were up against every other recreational runabout out there. SS’s whether or not in Barracuda or Mustang guise were obviously more deluxe with more gauges,console and chrome but in the Mustangs case it really kills the room inside and most likely why the console had been removed from mine when I bought it.

Here is some trivia for you newer owners that was originally supplied by Dave Hendricks



Someone will correct me if I'm wrong Chris but I seem to recall that obviously there were more than one mold for Mustang,American Skier,Skylark,Skier,Sportsman,Tahoe hulls and yours with the raised transom was also used for the optional I/O version. I thought at one time there was a thread on this but could not find anything. I also seem to recall that TRBenj has stated that that version is the faster of the two hulls
There are also 2 other dash versions as well- the 68 and 69 SS models-

Michael - as Riley said, it controls your nav lights and will also turn on a small bulb inside the fuel gauge viewing window on the rear deck. Make sure that bulb is connected/working while you have the boat apart.

Does your '68 have the same narrow dash panel as mine? At some point in 68/69 they switched to the wider dash panel. My boat also has the longer rectangular fiberglass decoration on the stern - I think the newer boats just have a small V-shaped line there. What does yours look like?
