While tearing doen '81 PCM 351w, I noticed a lot of FoMoCo blue under the chipped and peeling PCM silver. Did PCM receive them from Ford dressed in blue?
The block dates to '79 casting, I think its original. Thanks |

Ford most likely did not know who was going to marinize the engine when it was built

If you are going to repaint in silver, Bill Hirsch "aluminum " is a great match. Very good paint, much better than dupli color.

Every silver PCM 351 I've seen had nothing but bare metal under it. No blue paint. PCM blue in the mid seventies was quite a bit darker than Ford blue was too. I don't know when PCM changed to silver if it's original somebody maybe liked silver better than blue and did a cheap spray job. You don't usually see the paint peel on the original paint job either |

Not sure Ford shipped unpainted motors, and not sure PCM would bother removing the Blue, if any. It is darker than traditional FoMoCo corporate blue, but being a Mustang guy, Ford did change the engine blue around that time. The paint looks a lot like Commander blue, was wondering if the engine may have been replaced at some time. This looks very much like factory PCM paint (I've had several PCM's) with the correct decals and logos, etc. Not a cheap rattle-can job. Only the block, oil pan show the blue, the PCM specific marinizing pieces do not. And the paint very old. I'm the third owner, the second bought it 5 years ago from the then 86-year old original owner who took excellent care of the boat. Not a rough beater. And thanks for the tip on the paint as I do want to keep it silver. |

I'd say there's a good chance that the engine was a left over Escort after PCM bought them out. Then, PCM added their stuff and gave it the silver paint job.

I’ve seen some silver pcm’s with evidence of ford blue paint underneath. Earlier ones (very early 80’s) IIRC.
