I have a 1990 ski nautique and the trailer i have has a hinged bar that flips up onto the bow eye. Do most guys just switch out to a chain instead?   Maybe I'm just not good at driving the boat up the trailer but I'm always struggling with the bar.   I end up going to high or not high enough for it to jamb in place.

Bar or turnbuckle? Ramlins came with a turnbuckle which is pain in the a$$ but more secure I guess. I'm a fan of the chain.

LOL..i've had my 93 about a week now, and I got rid of the damn turnbuckle the first day..I went with a chain connection, like all my other boats had. SO MUCH easier.

Sounds like the OP has a mastercraft trailer.

You guys are crazy not to love the turnbuckle. It holds the bow down and forward, it's what keeps you from wearing out your rub rail and/or crash pads. They are fantastic when used properly.

Leave a gap to ease putting cover on and rub rail doesn't touch.

i agree, i never used a turnbuckle before i had this trailer. and i surprisingly haven't seen a need to change it yet and i put in at some sketchy ramps.
Even once i pull it out if its a hair away from the "bow pads' I always pull up the ramp and once i'm on the flat i give the brakes a good jolt and it slides forward while everything is still wet.

What Tim said. If you don't like the turnbuckle, you aren't using it correctly. Of course my trailer now has a winch and I wouldn't trade it for the world, but the turnbuckle was pretty damn awesome on the Ramlins.

I didn't care for the "braking to slide forward" crash pads, didn't mind the turnbuckle. switched it all out for a Ramp-N-Clamp. Now that I will never give up. Launching and retrieving is super easy.

thats not a bad setup. I like having the bow pads for getting everything lined up. there is no doubt a crank would simplify things a little but i don't think i would have gotten rid of the two bow pads completely. maybe a crank down low
another factor is the tow vehicle, some ramps if you aren't 4x4 or long wheelbase or the right combination of both, than you can really get screwed. I launched this weekend and had to back about 2 truck lengths into the water from where the shore was. it was a little sketchy. a crank would not have helped there either though.

I'm a huge fan of the turnbuckle, bring her in, latch, a couple of twists of the buckle and hit the gas......Couldn't be easier in my mind
