Any of you thought of or done this surgery, i.e. closed to open bow? I looked at a few Youtube videos of guys who have done this to other boats. It sure would make the boat more grandkid friendly.

My 2 cents, sell yours and start over with a new boat. I see no gain in doing surgery to your boat.

Since my boat has been used exclusively in salt water and hanging on a buoy since new and everything about the boat looks like it I doubt it is resalable for much if at all I feel that I'm stuck with it as the boat for the rest of my life (age 72). I have no interest in taking the $ hit of trying to sell this boat and pay ten to twenty thou for a different one. I do want an open bow though.

All depends on how you plan on doing it, but in all honesty, you are in for a whole lotta work, with very little gain. The bow on a 94 isn't big enough to get maybe 2 small children in it. Look at the reference section of the SNOB model.. Also, you are also most likely going to structurally change the boat so much, it might not be something you want to compromise..
If you are looking at making a "playpen" or walk through, no matter what you'll still need to change the windshield.. All a real pita if you ask me.
You'll put way more money into tearing up a boat and making something that it is not, verses getting something out of it and starting over with a boat that was made to do what you want it to.

SELL IT.. You can find an open bow for much less than you think. Look through the for sale section here or on Craigslist.. They are out there..

It's your boat so do what you want but before cutting that hole...

An actual 1995 open bow ski nautique has an entirely different deck. Not just a hole in the front but the windshield/dash/helm is all moved aft to make more bow space. Your open bow will be quite tiny.

You better be really good with fiberglass and gelcoat. Paying someone to do this will won't be cheap.

Correct Craft has been making open bows for years. You could find a nice runner for under $5k.

This boat makes me laugh every time I see it

I say sell this one and buy a Sport Nautique open bow.

I appreciate all of the comments and I think you all have pretty much convinced me to leave my boat as is but I am very particular about the open bow boat I want and I'm afraid I may have a hard time finding one, i.e. sloped stern, which I think is late '93 to early '96 and a 1 : 1.23 gear box as the engine sits about 6" lower in these boats, I think.

What are the chances I'd find a boat like this?

Much easier to find a SNOB or a Sport Nautique then to do the conversion.

The 89-92 Sport Nautique will likely be the least expensive option that satisfies your requirements.

People seem to be really proud of their boats here in the Seattle area...   Begin looking now, so you can spot a good deal when you come across one, but expect that you won't probably see super good deals until late august or early September when people figure out that they are going to have to store their boats for another winter.   I picked up my 94 on the cheap, but it had motor problems.   These boats are available on the other side of the mountains a little cheaper and more often... Wenatchee, Tri-cities, Entiat, etc.   If you're willing to do some work on one, you could have a pretty nice boat in the end.   Just one other thought...   I am probably about not too far above water on my boat, purchasing broken and fixing vs. buying a running copy... I wanted to do it this way so I could pay as I went, and not feel the pain of dropping $10K all at once, but I am not sure that it really has saved me much money, maybe only $1K.

Thanks for the good info. I had forgotten that the SN earlier than '93ish also had a sloped stern. I'll expand my search to include those. If I keep my boat I will have to re-upolster it so an older boat requiring the same type of makeover makes sense and it will likely be a little cheaper than a later boat. Thanks again and thanks for the good tips on looking
East of the mountains and later in the season as I am in no hurry. A boat with a bad engine, bad gearbox and in serious need of new upholstery will be the type of winter project I will be looking for. I'm an old retired guy with lots of time to burn, that is until I run out of birthdays, and I'm a consumate DIYer.

There was just an early rough Sport for sale on craigslist recently. Sounds like you're considering transplanting your drive train into an open bow project boat?

Thanks to everyone for your advice and information. Armed with your information and links I purchased a '92 Sport which needs a completely new interior, a lot of elbow grease and, hopefully only, a few small parts, If it runs out well on the water today I will keep it and restore it this winter. Otherwise it's going down the road and I'll look for a better one. My '94 Ski, which I bought new, will go up for sale either way as I have been informed that we need an open bow.

it's appearing that my wife is not interested in me restoring a '92 sport even though it runs out superbly. She wants us to start with one nicer for an additional ten grand. oh Well, I'm a project guy who enjoys bringing things back from the dead rather than buying a boat of similar vintage in better condition and trying to keep it that way. So I may soon have two boats for sale, i.e. a '92 Sport and a '94 Ski, both with excellent runners and both needing new interiors. Prices ~ $6k each, both with excellent tandem axle trailers. The Ski has 650 hours on it...I bought it new...exclusively on salt water never missing a beat since '94. The Sport has 240 hours...never on salt water until today for 30 minutes....both great boats. I won't know if they'll be for sale for a few days yet.
