I found this Southwind in northern Minnesota this weekend, no motor it had a 318 but that is gone. Interior is there but needs to be redone. the jet drive is all there. Hull is in good shape. Floor and stingers look in good shape. What's it worth? |

Phil,
Are you considering purchasing the Southwind jet? Have you ever driven a jet? Besides what Peter stated about backing them up and turning, the hole shot is horrible. You need plenty of room to get them on top of the water. I've had time behind the helm in a customers Bueller 18' with a 318 when I was at Watercraft Sales. The first thing I thought to myself was I'd never have a jet. Getting it up on top of the water was a challenge so I can just imagine what a bigger heavier Southwind would be like. The owner should ship it down south by Billy. He'd have a better chance selling it there to someone running in the bayou's. |

I was just thinking a Southwind so lithe and powerful should not even be allowed on the waters of the world

Gary,
I did see HW's comment on it's worth. Just maybe down south it would bring more $$$ and cover the cost of getting it down there! |

It would have its uses in some places. I've never seen one except for in the brochures. Not too good for water sports, although they're not a water sports boat anyways.

I think the boat is cool, but do envision it to be quite impractical – to approach anything along a reasonable cruising speed I imagine it was really spinning some rpms. The drone of a twin pipe Chrysler running down the lake at 4000 rpm is quite less impressive when the boat is only running around 25mph, the Doppler Effect ends up way off. Probably why there are transom mufflers and the engine has not survived to this point.

I remember Chris Craft made a wooden runabout that was a jet in the same hull as one of their inboards. A guy had one on Sebago Lake. It did scream and did not go fast, and he used a really long ski rope to pull skiers. Always very unimpressive when you hear a boat you expect to be going really fast and it is going slow.

Even though your now retired Pete your time is worth something, let's say minimum wage,10 an hour? 20 hours down 20 back -$400. Add tires and bearing check your up to 6 without fuel yet. Good example of how to make a million dollars selling old broken boats, start with 5 million we could however relay it out,it would be worthy as a exhibit in Connecticuts BCCM,Benjamin Correct Craft Museum,or the Carolina's BBC

Gary, you're not factoring the value of the visit with Billy.

I concur, reverse looks entirely futile. Not one of CC's better clusterglomerations!

Bruce, If I were to haul it down, I'd have to first make amends with Billy. He's still mad at me for suggesting he should have started a new thread instead of posting the Dart in Chris's Chris Craft thread! His daily calls have stopped. |

For a guy thats never been further south than I80 thats a long way down Pete. You'd have to be assured of making amends before that trip to avoid disappointment I also forgot Maine's BBBC,Bruce's Big Block Collection. All non profit operations but not 501c compliant.

I am with Joe on this, think it's a cool boat mostly for it's uniqueness.
Any idea if that Jet style is capable of throwing a rooster tail?? If so that capability alone would make it worthy of a complete restoration, lol |

And.. would it matter if it was a righty or a lefty?? Guessing not which opens up way more options on overpowering it!!

It doesn't even look like a factory installation. The squirter looks too high.
But, I like it. I'd use it to squirt the algae off my ramp. |

It's a cool boat, very different, that's what I like about it. I made him a offer on it just waiting to hear back. I know it no performance boat. Probably handles like crap. But never seen one before and I am sure I will probably never see another one. With the motor gone that opens up the repower to what what ever I want to put in.

Do check if impellers are still around for the model and be careful with the pitch. Just adding HP on a jet is just like adding HP to an original prop. |

Sorry, but for 14,850 I'm probably gonna want to at least hear it run. And a windshield, I'm gonna need the missing windshield. Oh well, it'll bring 14,850 in 2045.
I have not seen a pump like what's on the 2 Southwinds. Something just doesn't look right. |

Looks like its in fair shape. Whats the hour meter say? Appears value is minimalized to uniqueness only.

The SW jet would be useful on the Manatee River in FL. Not much good for anywhere else.
