Nice winter easter weekend!
Birthday party of my Girlfriend [;-)] on the river house.
heading back home and after cruising like 50th y gas the boat. About to plane I felt a little vibration, so back to idle, probably a water plant caught on the prop so I give reverse... nothing...revs but no movement...
I put forward...same thing...so either the tranny or damper plate went bad or the prop is gone...so to the water I go...no prop...
had a neighbor to tow me back to the house.
called the insurance tow and they would not pick me up due to high tide and wind. So I had to stay there over night and called them today morning to tow me back to mainland.
out in the marina I was able to see damage...prop went away with a piece of shift. ..my guess is material failure. I installed the prop the good way! I might add some pictures later as I'm posting from my phone...

Looks like he is missing some shaft too!
Hobby Boats can be expensive when the hobbyist is limited on their own skill and expertise.

On FB it looks like the shaft broke ate the upper end of the lapping area.
If I can get closeups, I can have the metallurgist in the office do a quick and dirty review

A friend of mine had the exact thing happen to him.   However, he was on a small pond and floated to the side and walked home! Not nearly the adventure you had!

wow thats sucks, sorry to hear. time for a new shaft i would say!
It makes me wonder if maybe that wheel was stuck real good at one point and someone heated it too much when trying to remove it causing it to compromise the hardening. its a bummer when that stuff happens, always happens in the worst weather too.

Looks plenty inside the lapped area. Nothing you can do about that!

also looks like it hit the rudder a bit on its way out. wonder if that helped out at all with the broken shaft.

You don't see a rail ways every day anymore. It used to be more common, now its all big fork trucks.
I would imaging that you would be able to source a shaft locally, plenty of sailboats running 1" shafts that could be cut down if need be.
let us know if you need any help.

Had a acme 1442,
I have a spare oem 14 X 16 and a spare shaft. I have to wait to the insurance liquidator to see the damage and then do the replacement.
The shaft was locally made. Seems poor alloy as I have heard same thing happening to some local ski boats that run 1 1/8 shafts from the same supplier.
May they are good for low hp applications. Now I will consider an are shaft or try another supplier.

I had the shaft worked a couple of time due to hitting logs.
I never heated it to remove the prop, I have a real good prop remover.

Kapla,

I understand the issues with importing, but it sure would be nice to get a double taper shaft for Discount Inboard Marine while this one is broken. Saw it at the coupler and install the new double taper shaft.

So seems im a lucky sob! My prop has been found by a friend of mine.
Water was very low today enough to make the search easier.
I will have it with me on monday...
The piece of shaft is attached to it!

Seb,
Yup, that's a lucky find. I suggest you have the prop checked and balanced.

Wow, can't believe you found it, a prop in a river is a needle in a haystack. That's some solid good luck, glad to hear!
