Ive been looking at some early to mid 90s Nautiques. Would love to find something with perfect pass already installed. If not, anyone know roughly what cost I would be looking at to get it installed. Are there other alternatives worth considering?

Thanks

The PP in our '92 just died on us. I was told, from PP directly, a replacement unit would cost about $500.

An entire PP system is going to be quite a bit more, like 12 hundo minimum range not including install. RPM based is about 50% cheaper but not 50% as functional IMO.

John, betting they were just quoting you an upgrade price, reusing the core components of your existing system.

Price was for a new display unit and new brain. The only other piece our current system has is little box that reads the magnets next to the driver's seat. Is there anything else in the system I'm missing?

There must be. You can't buy a new speed based PP system for $500 or anywhere close.

I forgot the mention the servo motor assembly.

From the original email with PP:

"$394 basically gets you a New Display AND a new DigitalPro Master Module. (All your other components are used)"

I guess the Smart Timer MAG Sensor and servo assembly make up the rest of the system? There's no paddle wheel or GPS in my current PP set-up.

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure PP works off engine RPM, a through hull paddle wheel or GPS depending on which model you have. I think ours is originally from 2005 and runs on RPM only. The PO included a paddle wheel when we purchased the boat, but we never installed it.

The magnets and sensor has to do with times from the course triggered by magnets in the buoys along the course.

Quinner is right regarding pricing.

Jody, over 12 thousand for Stargazer? No wonder you get those new boats every year!

My '98 had the earlier rpm based PP, didn't work very well for me. I upgraded to gps based, was around $550 three years ago if I remember correctly. The installed servo is fine for the upgrade.

OK, Im a little confused on the difference in the 3 event and wake edition?

"Designed for very serious course skiers and available on inboard ski boats only (Slalom, Trick, Jump & Wakeboard modes). Includes "All Buoy No Magnet Timing" feature. Those slalom skiers just looking for simplicity and a great pull should consider the Star Gazer Wake Edition S. Now featuring "No Mag Timing"

Sounds like both are adequate for course skiing, and neither require magnets? Is the wake addition more user friendly? Whats the difference besides price? I do some trick skiing too and assume its only a matter before my kids discover wake boarding. Not sure which would be the best one for my needs.

What you are paying for in the 3 event edition is software to post times in the slalom or jump course. Keep in mind "serious skiers" do not use Perfect Pass any more as all tournaments throughout the world utilize Zero Off. If the wake edition will allow one to hold a decent speed in the slalom course then for most non serious skiers it will work just fine.

Then, is zero off a better way to go? Looks to cost maybe a little more.

I think Zero off requires an engine upgrade to interface with the ECM module of the engine. Jody gets the engine bobtails that you see from time to time because he does the swap to upgrade serious skiers to the zero-off option.   Not sure how the price compares for the perfect pass equipment, but I would guess thousands for the engine and mount swap.

My guess is worth what you paid for it... so until someone confirms or rebuts my thought, don't rule out the zero off.

I was just about to ask that. Can someone confirm if there are extra costs for zero off? The kit doesn't look that much more but any other modifications needed?

Yep, lots of extra costs to either convert an Excal to E-controls ECU + ZO or to totally swap out a Ford mill for an Excal bobtail then add ZO. I may do it one of these days.

That's Correct ZO will not work on anything Ford or Non Drive by wire PCM Chevrolet with out conversion.
Common cost on a 02-06 Excalibur conversion with ZO will run between $3800-$4500 Depending on year and boat model.

Nice thing about Re-power from PCM is that they actually have conversion parts to stick the Excalibur right in the same holes as where the PCM Ford came out of and plug and play accouterments to coexist with previously Non EFI Boats and run ZO.
In the last 5 years We at Florida Inboards have done many Excalibur Re-powers and lots of conversions.

FYI A repower and ZO will set one back around $10K when it is all said and done. Still cheaper then a $$$$$$new Seventy thousand dollar skiboat !!!!!

Jody, what do you generally get for a lower hour (600 or less) GT40 pullout?

What ever I can get for them. In reality they are not worth what they should be worth as a complete unit. they are worth more in parts.

If you go with Stargazer Wake, I think there's a software stick that lets you upgrade to Three Event.

If you have the three even Stargazer, you can do a system reset, and restart as Wake Edition if you want. Doing that removes the Jump and Trick Modes. I found it simpler to run it as Wake Edition since I don't use those extra modes.
