Forgot the fly.....not the first time for that or a low pull llbd......I don’t know if I can tell the difference quite frankly. The water temp is about 70 degrees. Had the dry suit on last week but not anymore as long as Mother Nature continues to agree!

Greg and I have been barefooting together for 3 years now, mostly on our quest to perfect our LLBDs. Despite skiing together dozens of times, and being at multiple group events with many multiple man barefoot runs, we have never done a doubles run. Finally happened this past saturday. Next time ---- bacerds.

Thanks for the invite. October is harvest time for me being a midwest farmer so that probably wont work but that may just mean a special trip sometime. I am a bit envious of the longer season down south. Good skiing by the way. Keep the pics coming.

Hey everyone, looking for some voices of experience, RE: barefooting neck support/injuries.

My girlfriend is learning to barefoot and took a pretty bad fall a month ago today. Her neck got jacked up, we're pretty sure its a case of whiplash, and she is still having pain and range of motion issues today.

Has anyone else dealt with this? We talked to Ashleigh at the WBC and she said she would not recommend wearing a brace going forwards (because it limits your ability to tuck your chin on a fall), but I've never had lingering pain like this, or known anyone who has. Anyone agree or disagree with her? Does anyone know how to strengthen the neck to avoid this? She's getting slowly better and the pain is subsiding, but we're concerned that she could get really hurt.

Any words of wisdom or experience from the crowd?

Here's the fall in question...a hard fall, but nothing too crazy.

A month is a long time, has she been to a doctor – a good one for an MRI to know if there was any real damage.   As for strengthening the neck after she is turned loose I would say a combination of strength and flexibility is ideal – I am a fan pilates and romwod.

doctor- no. Chiropractor- yes, we started there, so there has been no MRI. Will check out the romwod, that's a new one to me. She loves her yoga, especially the hot one, but I don't know how much of that is neck focused. Spine, core, flexibility, alignmnet...check, but I just don't know enough about it otherwise.

I think every barefooter has had some neck trauma. It's rather unavoidable. Probably whiplash, I've gotten it backwards and forwards. Sometimes it takes a whole year to really go away, depends on the initial damage done how often you keep crashing!

I don't like wearing a neck brace forwards either.

Very nice deep'....she has really come along well! Sorry to hear of the neck issue but I agree with Hollywood that if you barefoot regularly a certain amount of neck trauma comes with the territory. Not a big fan of chiropractor for neck issues although I have used them many times for other problems with good results. She may never take a quicker fall than the one in your video.....those tend to stay in the memory bank!!

Kevin- somehow, that was exactly what she needed to hear. She said she feels way better knowing that some level of pain is normal and should be expected (although maybe this one is on the extreme end of the spectrum)

Bill- yeah, she really has come a long way. She's really flexible and strong so she's taken to it very naturally every step of the way. You say you don't like chiropractic for neck, do you have a history with (or recommendation for) neck problems?

The last thing I want is to have her hurt something and then make it worse.

This is a subject near and dear to my heart and I have been meaning to do a new video and explanation for neck injuries as I get alot of inquiries about neck braces as well as what to do with neck injuries.

After breaking my neck 2xs on different occasions, you can be sure this is near and dear to my heart. It changed the way I barefooted as well as taught barefooting. I am going to try and get a video done and post it on my site and I will post it here as well.

I will comb through here to address the issues here if possible.

If you have specific questions, please post them here so I can include them in my video, but I think I have a grip on the questions and concerns in this thread.

I went to a chiropractor once, not for myself but to watch with a friend.

He cranked her head so hard and so fast for a neck adjustment that I almost threw up. It was like snapping carrot or celery stick. No ***************ing way I'm having my neck twisted like that.

Lane, I'm not really sophisticated enough to ask you to go to trouble of putting together something like that. My questions are pretty simple.
What can I tell a new (female) barefooter about neck pain?
Is there a way she can prevent it (through technique or equipment)?
And maybe, is there a right or wrong way to fall? Barefoot falls happen so fast I'm not sure if there are any tips I can give her.

I appreciate you taking the an interest in my issue, we've never met but I know you by reputation and appreciateyour insight.

And HW- Just cause somebody has a job doesn't mean they're good at it. This fellow she sees used some pretty fancy equipment to find her alignment and then slow movements to adjust it. She said he was applying pressure, but it certainly didn't seem jarring. Of course, at the end of her appointment he tried to give me a hug, that was a little jarring I guess.

When you're new to anything it all happens so fast. Barefoot falls for me now feel like slow motion where I am thinking and processing what went wrong before the fall is even over. I ski "a lot" I guess but there are definitely a lot of folks that ski even more.

The more she skis the slower things will feel and she'll have more time to take falls better. Flat faced and chested falls are always going to hurt.

Come on Greg, he has no access to water, anyone with a barefoot boat, boom, or any teaching or skiing experience. Plus he has flat size 12 feet...terrible for skiing.

I have been debating whether or not to jump in on this topic - for the obvious reasons... I won't get all preachy or anything like that, but through my whole experience, I did learn one thing and the more research I did, the more I learned it is VERY consistent. So here it is:

If you take a bad wipe out and you experience a specific pain afterwards, that pain is like a burning session between your shoulder blades - seek medical attention immediately, better yet call 911, get a neck brace on and get on a back board. This pain, often described as feeling like a "Ring of fire" is an almost 100% indicator of broken or displaced vertebrae - and that is not something to mess around with. I can explain why you get that pain, but lets just leave it at it is a very consistent symptom.

The last thing you want to do is try to get out of your expensive barefoot suit or heater shirt or god forgive, drive yourself to the hospital - yeah, I did all of that, I am one lucky son-of-a-gun. So don't be like Steve. (BTW - all of the health care workers (a couple who are skiers) after looking at my video, agree a neck brace probably would have helped, but again, my wipeout was pretty unusual, and there is a long line of "what if's" that led to the crash.)

Ok, I miss the thrill of footing like you wouldn't believe, but I am living vicariously through everyone of you!

Thanks Steve. I understand your hesitation and was not going to call you out in the hopes of soliciting a response, but I very much appreciate you chiming in.

You describe the "Ring of fire" pain as being between the shoulder blades, is that meant to imply that it is back related, or neck related, or both? I'm trying to make sure I draw the correct parallel here, because the LAST thing I want is to let that little girl get hurt (or hurt further).

Not a doctor and I don't play one on TV, but as I understand it, the broken or displaced vertebrae disturbs nerves that enter the spinal column in both the thoracic (upper back) and cervical (neck) areas. This causes the radiating burning sensation. It is not a good indicator of where the injury is, just that their is an injury. In my case both thoracic and cervical vertebrae were damaged/displaced. Again, their is a remarkable consistency with the pain I described as an indicator of serious damage, like anything it is not an absolute, but a consistent indicator.
