I dont know Doc, you sure seem to be milking this project. Why dont you water test her already?

Just kidding with you- I can tell you did a lot of work there. I have to admit that I was skeptical when I heard you were going with paint- but it looks beautiful. Lots of nice details all around. Cant wait for a ride!

Tim, you have that in reverse, the project comes to a close soon.Karen wants to ride not look, lake test Sat.Timing, carb issues and a general run in to get ready for Green Lake.
Still am sure will have some bugs to sort out w/the cooling system, can't seem to get the water temp above 100 degrees.Raw water pump is making a lot of pressure, and think it is pushing the thermostat open, any ideas.
Am using a mech. water temp so as to know xact temp............boat dr

I assume youre just running on the hose right now. If youre supplying the engine with a good supply of real cold water, perhaps theres just not enough of a load to get it up to operating temp.

Have you verified that your stat is opening/closing at the right temp in a pot of water?

It looks freaking awesome, makes me excited to finish my 83 and get back to work on the 67. The cooling system is a tough nut to crack on those older setups. Yours is clean and looks awesome I wouldn't recommend doing to it what I think it would take to get the temp perfect, however...   if it didnt push open the thermostat it would overheat the exhaust manifolds. I think you need a regulated bypass of the thermostat I think I have a thermostat housing with a bypass in it somewhere from an old interceptor, its not in great shape but it would give you an idea of how to modify yours. Basically I am thinking a whole next to the thermostat to allow a fixed amount of water through to the exhaust until the thermostat opens up after being heated.

Joe,I drilled a 1/8 hole at the flange for this reason,to by pass a little water to the manifolds.Have an idea to reduce the pressure tho......
If you have the time give me a call and i will bounce it off you. Sounds to wild to even post.
Tim same stat that was it the motor for 5 years,I am only running mine in the lake,3 min. and she is in the water...boat dr

The hole in the old one I have is at least 3/8 of an inch. My cell phone isnt working for sh*t here I will try to give you a call when I get home, or if I stop by there between here and the lake. I am scared of reducing the pressure at all I think you want to get as much water through those manifolds as possible. I never could get the old interceptor system to work rock solid steady temp and eventually added a circ pump and a bunch of hoses, but I got pretty close and can at least tell you what I tried that didn't work.

The windshield amd wings had a lot of crazing tho,cut the winga out of Lexan, and paid TaylorMade too much for a new W/S.
From what I was told by Gail Mae,no more extrusion,I got the last one.Was a lot to pay then ,but seems like a bargain now.
I need a set of hinges for one side tho, you got a set or know of????????????[wings that is].............thannxs..........billy

But the rear needed something, so a friend has a sign shop, we looked in the book and .....
I was a little leary of the rear and the LA numbers, but after the fact am pleased.....thanx for the positive feed back..........boat dr

What a beauty! I haven't read any of those posts on that Hi Tech thread yet...Now I know why it is pages long. All your work has really paid off. How did you apply that Petit paint? I do remember you built a makeshift paint booth, or am I thinking of someone else? I would be too nervous to put her in the "WATER".
Keep those pictures coming.

79, all this work is for two reasons, show is good.
Go is the reason for the Hi Teks and all the other goodies.Sounds as if you can't stand on cubes and cam alone. Why the talk of some exotic racing fuel.
My old clunker is running 87 octane, and a pair of old ford heads, will not nearly make the HP that rocket ship you have. But if you will spot me a few I will take some pics of your stern............boat dr

Doc just have to have a little edge just in case their are some sandbagger's out there. Usually run 93 or 94 octane it just sounds better with the hightess fuel. The C14 isn't anything exotic just good old drag racing fuel for High compression motors, just mix it 50/50 with the other stuff otherwise you'll melt the motor

Tim , we did a group buy of 5 sets, with that order placed The Boat Doctor is now a Hi Tek Distr.BFD.I then sold the members their man. at wholesale. The price varied , but a small block ford painted cost about 1387.00 USD.Buying that many Allen bought the freight from Australia, about 225.00 USD
Contray to 79's advice, I would do it again. But I want to have something that no one else has, with the money I have invested in that 64 I could have bought two 2001 SN.
I guess I dance to the beat of a different drum,S/S looks better than alm,and weighs less than cast iron, at 12 per side she lost a little weight too...........boat dr

Doc don't get me wrong the hi-tek's look awesome especially the polished like yours, that would be the way I would go but I just question if it's really worth the money. The early results seem to show that there really isn't much of a gain in HP over the stock manifolds and for 1400 bucks it's awfull salty to look good.

I'll be the first one to say that I'm pretty sure your going to win best of show come GL and maybe even best holeshot, we'll have to wait and see about the top end speed. Yes I know your geared towards bottom end grunt and not speed should be nice week-end of boating looking forward to it.

Doc, boat looks really awesome, it is going to be great fun seeing all these boats up close and personal next month, looks like we need to call in an order for a supercharger and NOS for my boat just to keep up.

87,boat ran fine....Temp held at 140, guess the little trick worked. Joe said it well" that sounds just crazy enough to work"
Started off with 30 degrees of advance and mid range fuel.drove around a little while , warmed her on up to temp and mashed on it.Not quite as strong out the hole, bot pulled 5100 swinging thet 13x14 Austrel.
Will start adding some more timing each time i go out. Will buy a new set of plugs to do the soot ring......
overall very satisfied, the Hi Teks are louder, more than one person on the lake commented that she louder and sounded stronger.........boat dr

Second day out,new Holley 600,34 max.spark adv. 5100 max rpms. Not keen with the 400.00 spent on the Holley.
Seem to have lost some bottom end to gain a few R's on top.Ordered parts that Holley said would bridge the gap, between the 450 and the 600 cfm.
Seems the stroker falls right between the two as one is a little small one a little large.
It's only money, what the hell..........Holley says the stumble at WOT from dead idle is the #21 nozzle too small, ordered a set of #28.From there a plug chop and start playing with the jets,,,,,,

Does that mean youre going back to the 450cfm, doc? I would have thought that the 600cfm would have been perfect for a 331 stroker.

Glad to hear your temp situation is under control, not to happy to hear that your stumbling with the 600 cfm unit particularily when I have them dyno tuning my 408 with a 750 on it. I keep going back and forth between the 600 and the 750... will probably keep the 750 on till green lake and change it when I get back. I think in the end I will end up with a 600 with the choke horn milled off. You might want to try the 450 with the choke horn milled off eventually to get back your last couple hundred top end rpm.

Seems like I spend 400 bucks everytime I go out, this weekend blew all 4 speakers with the new stereo, 400 bucks, yesterday put in 4 new speakers ran battery dead in about 10 minutes, jumped battery and destroyed alternator trying to bring the battery back up, another 400 today for a new optima and alternator. 400 tomorrow for dyno testing on the new motor...

I dont know, Joe- 408 is a lot of cubes. A 750 may be a little more than you need, but I wouldnt say its overkill. According to the CFM calculator's Ive used, a 351w designed to spin up to 4400 could have gotten by with a 450cfm carb (even at 100% VE). PCM put the larger one on for a reason.

Can anyone verify what size Holley PCM put on the big blocks? I believe they were 4160's as well. Ive heard both 650 and 750, but not sure what is correct.

MY BFN has a 650 on it and it is running a big block. The 750 came on the HO 454 producing 425HP.

Joe, that was a crazy idea ,but it works, sent my xtra V/Drive to Eric today. Ater the water soak Saturday, made good sense to replace the 30 year old tranny with a new updated 04 style. Eric says it is stronger than my old 01 style, will replace dampner also.
30 year old starter gets a rest too,Arco still builds a new one,94.00 dollars is cheap ins.
It's still cheaper than a divorce...
Will try the 450 VS 600 and try to find a happy middle ground. The stumble is off idle when going WFO to get that parasail up,the nozzle is for the 450, not the 600. It is strong at full throttle from dead idle, just not as strong thru midrange, but a little higher top end and RPM's.
Just more bugs to iron out before G/Lake.............boat dr

Yeah just got one of them there ARCO's myself, your bugs are way ahead of mine I just finally got my engine in line at the dyno, still have to get it back and then remember all the little things that I have to buy to convert the boat back to a 351/408 from a 302. I swear after green lake I am not spending one more minute/dollar on "improvements" this year.

I should have put a caveat on that, I still have a new jetski motor to install and a lift kit, tires, and softtop for the bronco, so really I meant improvements for the correct crafts this year...

You're kidding Tim, you actually said that before launching into your dual exhaust masterpiece. I didn't post a comment on your "pipes" thread, but it is very impressive work.

You guys are really knocking yourselves out this year with projects like that and boat docs restoration, jbears mods and Marks limey paint job which are also hugely impressive. I can't help but think this site helps to motivate those kinds of projects. Not in a one upmanship sense, but in a getting help and ideas from others and building off of those. I think there are probably a fair number of projects getting tackled that might not be, were it not for the info shared here. Another kudos to Keith and his site and all the folks that all contribute in their own way.

Doc, Sorry to here about your paint problems. I think I remember you using Easypoxy. Correct? I sprayed the stuff for years and love it. One thing I have learned the hard way is that it must be sprayed in multiple coats with a min. dry time of 24 hours between. It doesn't have as much hiding qualities as other paint types. Interlux Brightside one part poly is the same. You may now have solvent entrapment in the paint. Any ideas from Petit yet? You may need to wet sand the top layer off, let it cure some more and shoot it again. How many coats did you spray?
