I understand the shalf coupling is supposed to have a steady drip. How steady is steady? Right now its almost a stream

I would say nearly a steady stream is too much of a "drip".

the coupling shouldn't have any water near it at all, the stuff box for the prop shaft should drip 1-2 drops a minute. Sounds like your trying to sink the boat.

If it was leaking before you put it in the water you DO have a problem!

JayR- it's been my experience that you have to tighten that up every year or two.
Using 2 large channels locks or pipe wrenches:
Step 1- Remove any saftey wire
Step 2- Back off the the lock nut (the skinny one)
Step 3- tighten the larger nut untill the water stops dripping or at least slows to a couple drips per min.
Step 4- tighten the lock nut
Step 5- replace the safety wire.

I had to tighten mine up this season. It only took an 1/8 of a turn. Don't over tighten it.It wears out and needs to be replaced after a while. Also check your rudder packing for drips.
Good luck

Replace that wax impregnated rope crap with the Gortex packing if you haven't already. Well worth $11.
