Last weekend I began rebuilding the tranny out of my 1967 Mustang - an AS1-71C. All went smoothly except that the reverse clutch that came with the rebuild kit I bought didn't match the origional one.
The original reverse clutch is made of phenolic or some other composite material. The new one is a three-piece steel affair, similar to the forward clutch stack. The big difference is in the thickness. The old one measures about .253 inches, while the new one is closer to .200 in. My question is: is there enough travel in the reverse piston to make up the extra 50 thousandths, or so; or should I put the old clutch (which looks to be servicable) back in? Thanks, John |

no, there are special plates required to replace that thick fiber plate, the three plates you recieved go in a later style trans,
they make three plates that equal the thickness of the fiber plate you have, its up to you if you want to re-use, call me if you would like a better explanation Eric 330-273-8291 |
