I have a very fast transmission leak in my '83 2001. It lost at least 2 1/2 quarts in less than an hour of running time. I just changed it out earlier this week, and it began slipping badly not far into our ride. Added more but it did not help for long, so I know the fluid is coming out quickly. I think it is the front seal but don't really have much to go on. Is the front seal difficult to replace? How can I be sure this is the problem? I am a decent weekend mechanic, but fear this may be too big a job> Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

if it is coming out that fast and you cant see it externally, chances are that it is the front seal, it is a 1983 and probably has never been out of the boat and replacing the front seal may not cure your transmission problems. with slipping the clutches it may now have a nuetral drag which means the forward clutches are warped from the heat

Eric,
Thanks for the info. I have contacted a couple of people about looking into it. Do you think it needs a full rebuild? If it needs just the seal, would you rebuild anyway while you had it out? Rather not have to do it again any time soon, and considering the age of the boat, it might need it anyway.
Thanks in advance.
