Hello all!!
Thinking of upgrading to a Ski Nautique but worried about running costs as petrol over here is very expensive. Has anyone converted for a diesel engine?? Mainly wakeboarding so top speed not so important and thinking that diesel engine would have better torgue on wakeboard speeds. Any suggestions on engine type much appriciated. Thinking about a american v8 because easier install. Is turbo needed??? Thanks before hand. |

I read on www.malibuboatowners.com about a new diesel motor that Malibu was looking at. I don't see any reason CC couldn't use the same.

It's apparently been done before in a nautique. I'd seriously consider the same in case my 454 ever gave out, given that it apparently bolts right in (I'm sure it's not quite *that* simple).
Check out this site, showing a newish ski nautique on the front page, although when you click into the link it details another boat. http://www.marinedieselusa.com/html/tow-sport2.html |

Why not just convert to LPG, it will cost a lot less than a diesel conversion and also the fuel is cheaper to buy. Yes you will loose some performance, between 5-10% but as you said top speed is not an issue for wakeboarding.

I would love to see a diesel ski boat offered. The added torque and 25-40% better fuel economy would be awesome. I do performance calibrations for a diesel engine manufacturer and it's amazing what you can make modern diesel's do.
Not to mention since a boat is an "off-road" vehicle you could use "off-road" diesel. It's dyed red and used primarily in Ag and Construction equipment but is typically $0.30-$0.40 less per gallon because it lacks the road tax. Fortunately for me my father-in-law is a farmer and has a barrel on the farm at all times. Lets see, increased torque, increased fuel economy, and decreased fuel costs....sounds like a win-win situation to me. |

Would this cause trans problems. It seems like that torque increase would be very hard on the trans?? -Brad-

You would also be adding weight, which would a good thing for wake boarding. Most diesels are heavier than gas engines of comparable size.

SunRunner,
Just out of curosity how much is a gallon(or equivalant)of gas(petro) in Finland. We are paying anywhere from $2.15 to $2.25 a gallon for the cheapest grade here in Georgia. |

Helllo!!
Seems the project has been moved forwards as I have busted my knee pretty bad and can't do any riding this summer Cheapest petrol here in Finland is about 1.2 €/liter and (red) diesel abt. 0.60 €/liter |

thay are very experienced too. the 6.2/6.5 based engines have lower compression than the truck engines for sustained high-load operation, and there is plenty of cool water for the intercooler. To make it work you'd have to swing a big-pitch prop because 36-3800 rpm is it, and that means upgrading to a 1 1/8" shaft to handle that low rpm power. There would be a weight penaly due to more accessories, but the basic weight is within 100# of a BB chevy, i hear. The 72C tranny used on the BB chevies is well proven at that application. |
